180 Patients Regain Sight After Receiving Cataract Surgery in Uganda

KAMPALA, UGANDA  August 20, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided free cataract surgery to 180 underprivileged patients in Uganda.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, patients came from across the country, including impoverished individuals, people with disabilities, the elderly and some children. 

“Many individuals, especially in rural areas, lack timely and appropriate eye care services,” Sherif said. “Access to healthcare is a right that everyone deserves regardless of their socioeconomic background.”

The national poverty rate in Uganda is approximately 30 percent. An estimated 42,000 Ugandans suffer from cataract blindness requiring immediate treatment. Delays in seeking treatment contribute to the high incidence of blindness in the country according to the National Library of Medicine.

1,671 Displaced Syrians Receive Hygiene, Water Supplies

IDLIB, SYRIA August 15, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided hygiene kits and clean water access to 1,671 displaced Syrians.

Approximately 400 families living in Kafr Yahmoon, Khazzan Camp, Zaitoun Camp and Maarshurin in northern Syria benefited from the aid. Hygiene kits contained essential items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers, and other personal hygiene products. Each family also received access to 5 barrels of clean water.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries were impacted by earthquakes that struck Turkiye and Syria earlier this year, leaving already struggling families at risk.

“Syrian families are living in precarious situations without access to basic needs like water and sanitation,” Sohail said. “This has led to a high risk of waterborne disease and other health issues. These aid deliveries are essential to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable families.”

Syrians have been facing ongoing conflict in addition to natural disasters in recent years. Since 2011, more than 6 million Syrians have fled the country and 6.7 million are internally displaced

According to the UN, 14.6 million people need humanitarian assistance in 2022, an increase of 1.2 million from 2021. The recent earthquake displaced families yet again and left them struggling to access food, water, and other basic needs.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in northwest Syria delivering food, rebuilding schools, completing water access projects, and responding to emergencies including the recent earthquakes. $5.35M in Medical Supplies Reach Turkiye, Northern Syria

ISTANBUL, TURKIYE April 5, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of a $5.35M medical aid shipment to earthquake-raved Turkiye and northern Syria.

The first two of seventeen containers arrived in Kahramanmaraş the day after a series of deadly earthquakes struck in Turkiye on February 6, 2023. The initial shipments included 200 hospital beds that were used to support doctors, medical technicians and nurses treating the critically injured in the wake of the disaster.

The remaining fifteen containers arrived in Mersin, a port city in Turkiye, and were dispatched to various hospitals and clinics within Turkiye and in northern Syria. Among the recipients were Kocaeli University Research and Application Hospital and Yozgat University Hospital in Turkiye, as well as Idlib National Hospital, Aqrabat Hospital, Noor Hospital for Women and Children as well as smaller clinics in the region.

The shipments included essential items such as medical equipment and devices, hospital beds and triage supplies. Hisham Morgan, operations director at Baitulmaal, oversaw the deliveries in Turkiye.

“The health sectors of both countries were overwhelmed and in dire need of medical supplies after such a large-scale tragedy. Those who survived the quakes were at risk of succumbing to their injuries without ongoing care and adequate resources,” Morgan said. “Thankfully, the shipments arrived in time. The receiving hospitals were very grateful for these donations and expressed their deepest appreciation to Baitulmaal donors.”

On February 6, 2023, a series of powerful earthquakes struck in southern Turkiye and northern Syria, followed by thousands of significant aftershocks including another deadly 6.3 magnitude quake two weeks after the initial 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes. As of February 22, 2023, the death toll stands at more than 47,000 people across both countries with thousands more injured, missing or displaced.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. In addition to the $5.35M in medical supplies, Baitulmaal distributed more than 340,000 meals in cities such as Hatay, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa in Turkiye as well as in Idlib in northern Syria. The charity also distributed blankets, tents, clothing, shoes, heaters and firewood to displaced families.

Baitulmaal has been in the region prior to the earthquakes delivering aid. In addition to food and winter relief, Baitulmaal also supports Uyghur and Syrian refugees in Turkiye, oversees hundreds of donor-sponsored orphans, and has reconstructed four schools including a large vocational school in Ras Al-Ayn, Syria. More than 4 Million Yemenis Benefit From Medical Distribution

ADEN, YEMEN, February 9, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of medications and supplies to 49 health centers serving 4,454,177 Yemenis. 

This distribution, part of a shipment valued at $4.6 million, targeted hospitals, primary care centers, trauma units and pharmacies in four governorates across Yemen. The health kits provide life-saving pharmaceuticals and essential medical, surgical, orthopedic, personal care, airway, and IV therapy kits to support the health and well-being of patients in Yemen, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Some of these health facilities had to close their doors because they did not have the necessary equipment and supplies to keep doctors and patients safe,” Sohail said. “With these health kits, Yemenis in search of healthcare won’t be turned away in their time of need.”

Considered the worst humanitarian crisis today, Yemen is poised to be the poorest nation in the world this year, according to the UN. An estimated 24 million people out of a population of 29 million are in need of healthcare support, but less than half of Yemen’s healthcare facilities are operational.

Since 2018, Baitulmaal donors have enabled millions of dollars in medication and healthcare supplies to reach vulnerable Yemenis. Donors have also funded two solar powered deep water wells as well as emergency distributions of food, hygiene kits, and winter supplies.
