KABUL, AFGHANISTAN May 8, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 202,500 meals to families in Afghanistan in time for the Ramadan season.

Food packages containing items such as rice, flour and cooking oil helped provide daily Ramadan meals to approximately 3,375 individuals. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, more than 50 percent of children who received the food assistance were orphans.

“Poverty and malnutrition is widespread in Afghanistan,” Sohail said. “Children are growing up with less resources and support after many crises in Afghanistan, but we have been empowered by our donors to reach families in need this Ramadan.”

Afghans have faced multiple challenges over the years, from political upheavals to weather emergencies, that have disrupted access to food, clean water and shelter. According to the UN, over half of Afghanistan’s population are in acute food insecurity, with 8.4 million people facing emergency level food insecurity – the highest number in the world.

In addition to providing food and emergency aid in Afghanistan, Baitulmaal has worked with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to evacuate Afghans and implement economic development projects.

This Ramadan, Baitulmaal delivered food packages for more than 3.6 million meals worldwide. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

Food Packages Distributed to More Than 12.8K Earthquake Survivors in Syria

More photos below

ALEPPO, SYRIA May 4, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages to more than 12,800 earthquake survivors in Syria.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries included 2,570 vulnerable Syrian households who have been displaced due to the earthquake, especially communities in hard-to-reach areas.

“Many families in Aleppo and Latakia were displaced from their homes due to the earthquake,” Bashir said. “Our team prioritized these families to ensure they received essential food assistance during these trying times.”

The World Food Programme estimates that 12.9 million Syrians – more than half the population – are in the grip of hunger, and the series of earthquakes have only exacerbated the brutal socioeconomic conditions many families face.

Baitulmaal immediately responded to the earthquakes that struck Turkiye and northern Syria earlier this year. Baitulmaal has been on the ground in northwest Syria delivering food, and responding to emergencies including the recent earthquakes. Hospitals and clinics in northern Syria were among the recipients of a $5.35M medical aid shipment. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

More photos below

WEST BANK, PALESTINE May 3, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 223,728 meals to impoverished families in Gaza and the West Bank in time for the Ramadan fasting season.

Approximately 232 families in Gaza and 400 families in the West Bank received the food packages. Packages contained items such as flour, sugar, oil, rice, tea, dates, cheese and canned goods that will help feed a family during the holy month.

In addition to the food packages, Baitulmaal provided iftar meals to 2,000 worshippers at the Al-Aqsa compound during the final days of Ramadan.

Palestinians routinely face the threat of violence during the holy month. In Ramadan of 2021, more than 250 Palestians were killed, including 66 children. This year, another 33 Palestinians were killed during Ramadan.

The decades-long occupation of Palestine has been a source of suffering for nearly 5 million Palestinians that have been forced into extreme poverty and food insecurity. More than 2 million people live in the Gaza Strip, often called the world’s “largest open air prison.”

This Ramadan, Baitulmaal delivered food packages for more than 3.6 million meals worldwide. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

$5.35M in Medical Supplies Reach Turkiye, Northern Syria

More photos below

ISTANBUL, TURKIYE April 5, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of a $5.35M medical aid shipment to earthquake-raved Turkiye and northern Syria.

The first two of seventeen containers arrived in Kahramanmaraş the day after a series of deadly earthquakes struck in Turkiye on February 6, 2023. The initial shipments included 200 hospital beds that were used to support doctors, medical technicians and nurses treating the critically injured in the wake of the disaster.

The remaining fifteen containers arrived in Mersin, a port city in Turkiye, and were dispatched to various hospitals and clinics within Turkiye and in northern Syria. Among the recipients were Kocaeli University Research and Application Hospital and Yozgat University Hospital in Turkiye, as well as Idlib National Hospital, Aqrabat Hospital, Noor Hospital for Women and Children as well as smaller clinics in the region.

The shipments included essential items such as medical equipment and devices, hospital beds and triage supplies. Hisham Morgan, operations director at Baitulmaal, oversaw the deliveries in Turkiye.

“The health sectors of both countries were overwhelmed and in dire need of medical supplies after such a large-scale tragedy. Those who survived the quakes were at risk of succumbing to their injuries without ongoing care and adequate resources,” Morgan said. “Thankfully, the shipments arrived in time. The receiving hospitals were very grateful for these donations and expressed their deepest appreciation to Baitulmaal donors.”

On February 6, 2023, a series of powerful earthquakes struck in southern Turkiye and northern Syria, followed by thousands of significant aftershocks including another deadly 6.3 magnitude quake two weeks after the initial 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes. As of February 22, 2023, the death toll stands at more than 47,000 people across both countries with thousands more injured, missing or displaced.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. In addition to the $5.35M in medical supplies, Baitulmaal distributed more than 340,000 meals in cities such as Hatay, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa in Turkiye as well as in Idlib in northern Syria. The charity also distributed blankets, tents, clothing, shoes, heaters and firewood to displaced families.

Baitulmaal has been in the region prior to the earthquakes delivering aid. In addition to food and winter relief, Baitulmaal also supports Uyghur and Syrian refugees in Turkiye, oversees hundreds of donor-sponsored orphans, and has reconstructed four schools including a large vocational school in Ras Al-Ayn, Syria. Displaced Syrian Families Receive Aid After Earthquakes, Floods

More photos and video below…

IDLIB, SYRIA March 17, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of emergency food, water and supplies to 425 families displaced by earthquakes and flooding in northern Syria.

The distribution took place in six camps in two communities in the Maa’raat Misrin sub-district, most of which were established after the earthquakes on February 6, 2023. Families received items such as bread, clean water, sanitary napkins, infant formula and blankets.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, displaced families were at risk of illness and water-borne diseases after recent floods compounded the disaster in the region.

“Families who survived the initial earthquakes were facing more and more difficulties as the days went by,” Sohail said. “Basic necessities such as clean water, baby food, and hygiene products were urgently needed in these camps, and our donors came through to ensure that these families had them as soon as possible.”

After the deadly earthquakes on February 6, 2023 in which more than 50,000 people died across Turkiye and northern Syria, ongoing aftershocks and flash floods continue to affect vulnerable families in the region. In northwest Syria, a dam collapsed causing the Orontes River to overflow and flood villages where families had relocated after the earthquakes. In this area alone, approximately 1,000 houses flooded and 7,000 people were evacuated. Across the border in Sanliurfa, Turkiye, at least 16 people have perished in flash floods according to state news agency Anadolu.

NGOs like Baitulmaal are crucial in mobilizing aid to people in need. Baitulmaal has been on the ground in northwest Syria delivering food, rebuilding schools, completing water access projects, and responding to emergencies prior to the earthquakes. Last month, $5.35M in medical aid supplies were dispatched to hospitals and clinics in Turkiye and northern Syria in addition to emergency food, heaters and tents. Food, Heaters Distributed in Turkiye Before New Quake Struck; More Aid on the Way

???? More photos and video below… ????

GAZIANTEP, TURKIYE February 20, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 430 heaters and firewood along with hot meals to families displaced by two powerful earthquakes that hit Turkiye and northern Syria early last week.

The distribution took place in Islahiya, Turkiye, one of the hard-hit towns in the province of Gaziantep. Most of the population is now living in tents away from cordoned-off areas full of damaged buildings and piles of rubble. Many were burning scraps to keep themselves warm in subzero temperatures, so the provision of heaters and firewood helps alleviate the cold and risk of unsafe heating methods.

Author and activist Linda Sarsour joined the Baitulmaal team on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria, visiting with survivors, distributing aid, touring donor-funded schools, and bearing witness to the devastation of the quakes.

In an interview with TRTWorld, a Turkish public broadcast service, Sarsour called for sustainable solidarity.

“It’s not just one donation, these are people living in tents and have no idea when they’ll be able to live in permanent housing.” Sarsour said. “So the question is, will our solidarity be for one day? Is it temporary? Or are we going to stand with these people until they get back on their feet?”

One day after Sarsour returned to the United States, another powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck in Hatay, where Baitulmaal staff had just finished distributing 1,000 hot meals to survivors in Hatay and Gaziantep minutes before the ground shook. They are currently on the ground in the affected areas assessing the situation to mobilize more aid.

Sarsour is encouraging people to continue to support the efforts of humanitarian nonprofits like Baitulmaal as they rush to provide life-saving aid to those impacted by ongoing earthquakes in Turkiye and northern Syria.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. The charity dispatched a $5.35M shipment of medical supplies which began to arrive in Kahramanmaraş, Turkiye as early as Tuesday of last week. Baitulmaal has also been regularly distributing hot meals, blankets, clothing, and shoes to displaced families and orphans. The charity is preparing to provide temporary shelters, run ambulance services and operate medical tents in the coming days. Orphans, Families Displaced by Earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria Receive Aid

???? More photos below… ????

SANLIURFA, TURKIYE February 16, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food, blankets, thermal clothing and shoes to 100 orphans and their families displaced by a series of earthquakes that hit Turkiye early last week.

The distribution took place in Sanliurfa, a Turkish city that hosts tens of thousands of Syrian refugees. Food and clothing were distributed at the Bangash Center in Sanliurfa, while blankets were delivered directly to families living in temporary shelters in the Bazar camps.

Researcher and author Dalia Mogahed joined the Baitulmaal team on the ground in Turkiye and witnessed first-hand the toll these quakes have had on residents in the area, including local humanitarian aid workers.

“The stories I heard, the resilience I saw, truly humbled me,” Mogahed said. “From the head of the relief workers who has been living in his car with his family for the past eight days while undertaking aid efforts, to the refugee woman who lost four of her adult children in the quakes and is now caring for all of her orphaned grandchildren. These are wounded healers who exemplify compassion – and who need it from us.”

Having escaped war in Syria, many Syrian families sought refuge in the ancient Turkish city of Sanliurfa – where 1 in every 4 residents is a refugee – only to be displaced once again by the deadliest earthquake in a generation. As of February 15, 2023, more than 41,000 people have perished in the quakes. Thousands of children are now orphaned, and millions of families are displaced across both countries.

Mogahed is encouraging people to support the efforts of humanitarian nonprofits like Baitulmaal as they rush to provide life-saving aid to those impacted by the earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria as well as secure donor sponsorship of orphaned children.

GAZIANTEP, TURKIYE February 09, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered the first two of seventeen medical supply containers valued at $5.35M to earthquake-ravaged Turkiye and Syria earlier this week, in addition to food, water and other aid to victims of the quakes.

The initial shipment arrived in Kahramanmaraş, Turkiye and included 200 hospital beds that will be used to support doctors and nurses treating the critically injured in the wake of the disaster. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, subsequent shipments will include essential items such as medical equipment, medical devices and triage supplies.

“The scale of this disaster is immense,” Sohail said. “But so is the compassion of donors who have rallied to support the victims of these devastating earthquakes.”

In the early hours of February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaraş. A 7.5 magnitude quake hit a few hours later, followed by numerous significant aftershocks. As of Thursday, more than 20,000 people were killed across southern Turkiye and northern Syria, with thousands more injured, missing or displaced.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 23 million people across Syria and Turkiye are likely to face the threat of a “secondary disaster” if aid does not reach them soon.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. In addition to the $5.35M in medical supplies, Baitulmaal distributed 3,000 hot meals in Sanliurfa, Turkiye and another 5,000 hot meals in Jindires in northern Syria.
