Baitulmaal Responds to Mass Afghan Deportations

Herat, Afghanistan August 31, 2025 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided emergency aid to nearly 10,000 Afghans affected by mass deportations from neighboring countries.

The aid included the distribution of 18,000 hot meals, transportation, clean water, and hygiene kits to people in the Islam Qala border camps. According to Elora Bashir, senior manager of program operations at Baitulmaal, most of the beneficiaries were women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

“No one should have to endure displacement and uncertainty alone,” Bashir said. “Providing meals, clean drinking water, and basic supplies is our way of standing with our Afghan brothers and sisters during their most difficult moments.”

According to UNICEF, 80 percent of households in Afghanistan cannot afford a nutritious diet, and only 12 percent  of children aged 6–24 months receive the appropriate variety and quantity of food needed for healthy growth.

Afghanistan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis due to massive deportations. Since March 2025, over 1.5 million Afghans have been forcibly returned, overwhelming the country’s already fragile infrastructure and economy.

In addition to delivering emergency aid to earthquake survivors in Afghanistan, Baitulmaal has also provided fresh meat for Udhiyah, and Ramadan food meals, and provided winter relief. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

HERAT, AFGHANISTAN November 20, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency aid to more than 4,270 earthquake survivors in Afghanistan after multiple earthquakes struck the region last month.

Approximately 500 families in the Herat province received warm clothes and blankets to protect themselves from the cold weather. An estimated 70 percent of  beneficiaries were women and children according to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal.

“Most of the affected families lost their means of protection and shelter due to the multiple earthquakes that struck,” Sohail said. “With the temperatures dropping, women and children were at risk of falling ill without warm clothes and blankets.”

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Herat province in western Afghanistan was hit by the first of a series of four deadly earthquakes, all measuring 6.3 magnitude. According to UNICEF, almost 1,500 people were reportedly killed in Herat and the surrounding districts. In the three most affected districts, around 150,000 people either completely lost their homes or their homes were severely damaged.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Afghanistan mobilizing aid to affected areas. In addition to delivering emergency aid after earthquakes and floods, Baitulmaal provides food, winter supplies and income generation projects. ROSTAQ, AFGHANISTAN May 14, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed back-to-school kits to 250 students in Afghanistan.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, the Noorullah Wafa school began as a single classroom with 30 students, and has now grown to a total of 250 students enrolled for the school year. These students were welcomed with back-to-school support such as uniforms, backpacks, textbooks, and stationaries.

Education is a fundamental human right, and every child has the right to an education,” Bashir said. “By providing education to girls in Afghanistan, we can help ensure that all children have access to this right, regardless of their gender or socioeconomic status.”

According to UNICEF, Afghanistan’s education system has been devastated by more than four decades of continuous conflict. For many of the country’s children, completing primary school remains a distant dream – especially in rural areas and for girls – despite recent progress in raising enrollment.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN May 8, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 202,500 meals to families in Afghanistan in time for the Ramadan season.

Food packages containing items such as rice, flour and cooking oil helped provide daily Ramadan meals to approximately 3,375 individuals. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, more than 50 percent of children who received the food assistance were orphans.

“Poverty and malnutrition is widespread in Afghanistan,” Sohail said. “Children are growing up with less resources and support after many crises in Afghanistan, but we have been empowered by our donors to reach families in need this Ramadan.”

Emergency Flood Aid Distributed to More than 4,000 Afghans

???? More photos below… ????

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN September 15, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food and hygiene kits to 4,070 Afghans impacted by destructive floods in the Logar province of Afghanistan.

Approximately 370 families received aid provisions such as rice, flour, cooking oil and soap. The majority of recipients were women-headed households or families with disabled, injured, elderly or otherwise vulnerable members. Many of the families lost their homes due to heavy floods and suffered the loss of family members, livestock, crops, shops or cars.

The floods came at a time when families in Afghanistan were already strained by economic, social and political upheavals, according to Baitulmaal’s program manager, Elizabeth Sohail.

“Families were trying to do their best in such difficult times, but heavy rains washed away what little they had,” Sohail said. “We are grateful to be able to step in and help them get on firmer ground with the necessities they need to keep hunger and disease at bay.”

Afghans are being hit with multiple challenges. Climate change is causing devastating weather emergencies that disrupt access to food, clean water and shelter. In addition to deadly floods, Afghanistan was rocked by an earthquake in June that killed more than 1,000 people.

The war in Ukraine has also impacted food supplies. According to the World Food Programme, food prices in Afghanistan have risen nearly 40 percent over the last eight months. Human Rights Watch has also reported that 13,000 newborns have died from malnutrition and hunger-related diseases in Afghanistan since January, and 3.5 million children need nutritional support.

In addition to providing food and other aid, Baitulmaal has worked with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to evacuate Afghans and implement economic development projects.
