GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE July 18, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonproft, recently completed the first month of its medical mission to support vulnerable patients at the Nasser Medical Complex in the besieged Gaza Strip.

According to Riham Mahmoud, Baitulmaal’s health delegate in Cairo and former employee of the Gaza Ministry of Health, the goals of Baitulmaal’s medical mission include:

      • decreasing mortality and complications among ill, injured, or pregnant patients;
      • increasing access to quality healthcare;
      • boosting capacity building among Gaza’s healthcare providers, including technical surgical skills;
      • decreasing the wait time for surgeries;
      • and improving the efficiency of medical interventions by providing essential needs such as drugs, equipment, and disposables.

Three physicians participated in Baitulmaal’s inaugural medical mission to Gaza: U.S.-based obstetricians Dr. Hina Cheema and Dr. Thalia Raya Pachiyannakis joined neonatologist Dr. Zohair Lahna from France at the Nasser Medical Complex. The doctors volunteered their time and expertise to support maternal and newborn healthcare in Gaza amid ongoing blockades and bombardments in the region.

“We witnessed four stillbirths that could have been prevented if there was appropriate equipment,” Dr. Cheema said during an interview with Hind Khoudary of Al-Jazeera English. “It is heartbreaking…the stillbirth rate has increased. Babies are dying, and they should not have to die.”

Despite the daily horrors and severe lack of resources, there is still hope according to Dr. Pachiyannakis.

“It is so inspiring to see the Palestinian doctors come to work every day and give their all to the Palestinian people that are suffering,” she said. “They are working under unbelievable stress with limited resources. They are not being paid for nine months, all the staff, but they come with such happiness because they are caring for their patients.”

Nasser Medical Complex, located in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, is one of the key healthcare facilities in the region providing essential medical services to the population despite ongoing hostilities and severe resource constraints. The hospital has been severely affected by the conflict, experiencing extensive damage to its infrastructure, including critical areas such as the maternity ward, ICU, and the Limb Reconstruction Centre, which previously helped over 400 patients avoid amputation. Medical staff resumed services at the Nasser Medical Complex to care for the increasing number of patients impacted by ongoing displacement and hostilities in the Gaza Strip, but continues to face severe shortages of fuel, equipment, staff, and other resources.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, more than 38,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and more than 88,000 have been wounded according to local health officials. Malnutrition and disease have become widespread due to frequent displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and ongoing blockades on food, water, fuel, and other essential resources. The latest U.N. figures report that 23 out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are out of service, more than 60 percent of Gaza’s primary health facilities have shut down, and those that are remaining are only partially functional. More than 500 healthcare workers have also been killed since October, while women, children, and newborns are disproportionately bearing the burden of the hostilities in Gaza.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support, temporary housing, and other emergency aid since October 7. Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza

DALLAS, TX May 1, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 10,196,500 Ramadan meals across Palestine as part of the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Eighteen truckloads of food packages were successfully brought into Gaza through the Rafah border crossing as part of Baitulmaal’s 4th aid convoy. Food for approximately 9,183,500 meals was distributed to thousands of displaced Palestinian families in the Gaza Strip. In addition to distributing food packages that contained essentials such as oil, flour, rice, dates, cheese, and canned goods, the charity operated Baitulmaal Kitchens in Jabalia Camp in northern Gaza and Rafah City in the south. Field teams prepared up to 2,000 freshly-made hot meals daily and provided access to approximately 150,000 liters of clean water at various locations.

In the West Bank, food for approximately 1,013,000 meals was distributed in Nablus, Balata, and other camps, as well as in Jerusalem. In addition to food packages, 8,500 ready-to-eat iftars were provided in the West Bank, and another 8,500 iftars were provided to worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, ongoing violence in Gaza has drastically impacted food security across Palestine.

“The most severe food crisis is occurring in northern Gaza, so our teams began to allocate resources there before Ramadan in order to maximize food preparation and distribution to displaced people there and in the south,” Sherif said. “We also made sure to distribute food in the West Bank and Jerusalem, where many families are also experiencing aggression and food insecurity.”

In addition to food package distribution, hot meal preparation, and water access points, the charity also distributed Eid clothes to 1,500 displaced Palestinian children in north and south Gaza, and held Eid celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan.

“Our compassion extended beyond the necessities of life to ensure that children in Gaza also experienced the joy of the holidays,” Sherif said. “We are very grateful to our generous donors for enabling these efforts and continuing to support our brothers and sisters in need.”

Since October 7, Israeli forces have killed approximately 35,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, injured over 70,000, and displaced more than 1 million residents, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Israel also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza, allowing only a fraction of aid trucks into the besieged Gaza Strip.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. The charity has also successfully mobilized four humanitarian aid convoys, with a total of 53 trucks crossing into Gaza to date. Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza. Having staff and resources on the ground has enabled Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need, as well as efficiently receive and distribute additional humanitarian aid through Rafah crossing.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza as the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Distributes Safe-Drinking Water to 10K Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

GAZA, PALESTINE April 19, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 50,000 liters of safe-drinking water in Gaza that served approximately 10,000 Palestinians.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries included approximately 2,000 families living in the Jabalia refugee camp in North Gaza. These families have been forced out of their homes and internally displaced after decades of severe bombardment.

“Women and children gathered around the water trucks eagerly filling their containers with fresh water,” Sherif said. “For many, this was the first time in weeks they were able to access clean water.”

According to the UN, more than 96 percent of the groundwater in Gaza is “unfit for human consumption.” Since the extreme blockade of humanitarian aid in Gaza, resources have been severely limited, making safe, clean water difficult to find. Waterborne diseases such as polio have been rising due to the contamination of the water, posing huge risks to an already vulnerable population.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. Baitulmaal’s 3rd Convoy Enters Gaza, Provides Emergency Aid For 112K Palestinians

RAFAH, PALESTINE March 10, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency humanitarian aid to over 112,000 displaced Palestinians in Gaza after the successful entry of Baitulmaal’s third aid convoy from Egypt.

Ten trucks crossed into Gaza from the Rafah border crossing carrying humanitarian aid such as 1,200 mattresses, 800 food packages, 800 blankets, 595 rolls of tarpaulin (221K sq m), 400 hygiene kits, 400 mats, and 400 tents.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, conditions in Gaza were assessed to determine the most urgent humanitarian aid needs before securing and mobilizing the necessary supplies.

“Over one million women, children, elderly, and injured Palestinians were forced to flee to South Gaza,” Sherif said. “Overcrowding in the region and delayed flow of aid caused limited access to necessities such as shelters and tents. Thankfully, we were able to source and deliver these supplies to thousands in need.”

According to UNRWA, more than 30,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been killed by Israeli forces, more than 72,000 Palestinians injured, and more than 1 million residents internally displaced. Israel has also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza. According to the United Nations, this has caused about 16 percent of children under the age of two to suffer from acute malnutrition, and caused more than 2 million people to face the worst levels of food insecurity.

Baitulmaal’s first humanitarian aid convoy successfully entered Gaza with 14 trucks of aid, and the second humanitarian aid convoy entered Gaza with 10 trucks of aid. This will be the third aid convoy that has entered Gaza, with more aid convoys on the way.

In addition to the entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza, Baitulmaal has also been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. 120,000 Displaced Palestinians Receive Food, Hygiene Supplies in Gaza

More photos and video below

RAFAH, PALESTINE January 18, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency humanitarian aid to 120,000 displaced Palestinians in Gaza after the successful entry of Baitulmaal’s second aid convoy from Egypt earlier this week.

Ten trucks crossed into Gaza from the Rafah border crossing carrying humanitarian aid such as 2,160 food packages, 2,700 hygiene kits, and 120 tonnes of freshly ground and packed flour.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, the expressed needs of displaced Palestinians were taken into account when determining what aid to secure on the restricted numbers of trucks that are allowed into Gaza.

“We prioritized dignity kits for women and girls after hearing about their struggles,” Sherif said. “We also took into consideration other needs such as dry yeast to bake bread, as well as their desire for coffee and tea that gives them some comfort.”

The 120 tonnes of flour were allocated to families in Khan Younis, Rafah, and cancer and kidney failure patients. According to Sherif, a local group of women volunteered to prepare 120,000 loaves of fresh bread for these patients.

This aid convoy was overseen and prepared in Egypt by a delegation of U.S.-based activists that included Linda Sarsour, Zahra Billoo and Suzie Othman.

“Resources are getting into Gaza,” Sarsour said, referring to Baitulmaal’s ability to pass inspections and send critical aid into Gaza. She thanked the charity and its donors who “allow us to bless the people who are in Gaza and all around the world who need these resources in these very dire times.”

Since October 7, Israeli forces have killed more than 25,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, injured more than 57,000, and displaced more than 1 million residents, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Israel also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza. Prior to October 7, Gaza relied on more than 500 humanitarian aid trucks per day to meet the needs of the population. Since then, only a fraction of aid trucks have been allowed in.

Baitulmaal’s first humanitarian aid convoy successfully entered Gaza with 14 trucks of aid. This will be the second aid convoy that has entered Gaza, with more aid convoys on the way.

In addition to the successful entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza, Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. Author and activist Linda Sarsour, civil rights leader Zahra Billoo, and entrepreneur Suzie Othman traveled with Baitulmaal digital communications manager Nida Kazi to Cairo, Egypt. While in Cairo, the group visited Palestinians injured by the violence in Gaza who are now recovering in Palestine Red Crescent Society Hospital located in Egypt.

The delegation also helped load a total of ten trucks before the convoy made its way to the queue at the Rafah border crossing:

  • Four trucks contained 120 tons of freshly ground wheat flour.
  • Three trucks contained 2,700 hygiene kits that include items such as soap, wipes, sanitizer, towels, tissues, dental care items, deodorant, women’s sanitary napkins, undergarments, and winter gloves and scarves.
  • Three trucks contained 2,160 food packages that include items such as rice, oil, beans, pasta, milk, cheese, dates, lentils, hummus, coffee, yeast and salt.

“We came to bear witness to humanitarian aid efforts that are underway for the people of Palestine,” Kazi said. “We had the opportunity to pack each item intended for our Palestinian brothers and sisters with love and care, and spoke with injured Palestinians to comfort them and let them know that we will continue our humanitarian efforts to aid the people of Gaza.”

Since October 7, Israeli forces have killed more than 23,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, injured more than 57,000, and displaced more than 1 million residents according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Israel also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza. Prior to October 7, Gaza relied on more than 500 humanitarian aid trucks per day to meet the needs of the population. Since then, only a fraction of aid trucks have been allowed in.

Baitulmaal’s first humanitarian aid convoy was dispatched a few weeks earlier. This will be the second aid convoy dispatched by Baitulmaal to Rafah crossing.

In addition to the successful entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza, Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. Prior to October 7, Baitulmaal had been working in Palestine for more than a decade providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza. Having staff and resources on the ground enables Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza as the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

GAZA, PALESTINE November 15, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is currently providing psychosocial support to hundreds of displaced Palestinian children seeking refuge in shelter centers across the Gaza Strip.

Displaced children are receiving psychosocial support through toys, activities, and friendly faces in shelter centers and schools located in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah. According to Ahmed Sheriff, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, the mental health of children is an unseen crisis that is unfolding in Gaza.

“These children are living through the horrors of war,” Sheriff said. “Our compassionate donors have been able to put a smile on their faces during these dark days and helped ease some of their suffering.”

In less than six weeks, Israel has killed more than 11,000 Palestinians. According to the UN, of those killed, about 41 percent are children and 25 percent are women. On average, one child is killed and two are injured every 10 minutes. For many children, this is not the first experience of violence in their short lives. A 16 year old child in Gaza today would have been born under an occupation and lived through violence in 2008, 2012, 2014, 2021, and the current crisis in 2023.

In addition to psychosocial support for displaced Palestinian children, Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza distributing shelter kits, food, hygiene supplies, clean water and other emergency aid since October 7.

Baitulmaal Operates Clean Water Stations for 44,500+ Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

GAZA, PALESTINE November 9, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is currently operating clean water stations in shelter centers located in various areas of Gaza that serve more than 44,500 displaced Palestinians.

Clean water stations have been set up in schools and refugee centers located in central and southern Gaza, including Al-Zawaideh, Deir Al-Balah, Al-Khawalda, Al-Sawarha, Al-Maghazi Camp and Al-Nuseirat Camp. These stations ensure clean water access to thousands of Palestinians displaced within Gaza since October 7.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, the charity was operating 400 water tanks across Gaza prior to October 7 which were refilled weekly to provide clean water access to families in need. Due to the recent bombardment and blockade of the Gaza Strip, the charity rerouted its available water resources in the region to serve the needs of the displaced population.

“We are grateful to our team in Gaza who were able to pivot quickly to address the evolving situation on the ground,” Bashir said. “We are also thankful to our donors who enable us to provide clean water to as many people as possible during this critical time.”

Access to clean water has been one of the biggest challenges in Gaza, even prior to the recent crisis. According to the UN, more than 96 percent of the groundwater in Gaza is “unfit for human consumption.” Since the recent blockade and bombardment of Gaza, resources have been severely limited, making safe, clean water even harder to find. Cholera is rising due to contaminated water, posing huge risks to a population that has been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in overcrowded shelters.

Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating desalination plants and 400 water tanks in Gaza .
