Donor-Sponsored Masjid Serves 200 People in Pakistan

SINDH, PAKISTAN May 20, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the construction of a masjid in the village Sain Dino Jat, serving around 200 people.

According to Elora Bashir, senior manager of program operations at Baitulmaal, this donor-sponsored project aims to meet the community’s need for a safe and accessible place to gather, pray, and connect. It also includes a water well to provide the community with a clean and reliable source of freshwater.

“This isn’t just about a building—it’s about providing a safe, welcoming place where our brothers and sisters can come together,” Bashir said.

According to the World Bank, more than 75 percent  of Pakistan’s population lives in rural areas, where infrastructure remains critically underdeveloped.

In addition to building a Mosque in Pakistan, Baitulmaal has also provided Ramadan food packages, and fresh meat for Udhiyah, installed a water filtration plant, delivered emergency aid to flood victims, and supplied winter aid. New Borehole Brings Clean Water to 3,000 Families in Somalia

GALKAYO, SOMALIA April 5, 2025 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the construction of a borehole well that provides clean water to 3,000 Somali families and their estimated 200,000 livestock.

The 230-meter-deep well was built in Sadeh-Higlo Town, located in the Mudug region. According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, the community has relied on a single, 20-year-old borehole as its only water source—an increasingly strained resource that led to ongoing water shortages. The new well is expected to significantly alleviate those challenges.

“This well is more than just a water source—it’s a symbol of hope,” Sherif said. “It’s incredibly moving to see how something so essential can bring such a sense of relief and renewal to an entire community.”

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), frequent droughts and the impacts of climate change have intensified water scarcity across Somalia, putting additional pressure on already vulnerable rural communities.

In addition to constructing borehole wells in Somalia, Baitulmaal has also provided Ramadan food packages, distributed fresh meat for Udhiyah, and promoted back to school efforts in Somalia. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Delivers Over 700K Liters of Clean Water in Kenya

WAJIR, KENYA April 19, 2025 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 720,000 liters of safe-drinking water in Kenya, benefiting more than 15,400 people and livestock in areas severely affected by prolonged droughts and insufficient rainfall.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, most of the beneficiaries included women, orphans, and people with disabilities living in Wajir County.

“Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet thousands in Wajir live without it,” said Sherif.“By delivering safe drinking water directly to these communities, we are helping close the gap in access to essential resources.”

According to the Kenyan Ministry of Water and Sanitation, more than 80% of Wajir County’s population faces chronic water shortages, with many relying on seasonal water pans and unprotected sources that are often unsafe for consumption.

In addition to responding to emergency aid in Kenya, Baitulmaal has also provided fresh meat for Udhiyah, and Ramadan Food Packages. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, please visit johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Distributes Safe-Drinking Water to 10K Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE April 19, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 50,000 liters of safe-drinking water in Gaza that served approximately 10,000 Palestinians.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries included approximately 2,000 families living in the Jabalia refugee camp in North Gaza. These families have been forced out of their homes and internally displaced after decades of severe bombardment.

“Women and children gathered around the water trucks eagerly filling their containers with fresh water,” Sherif said. “For many, this was the first time in weeks they were able to access clean water.”

According to the UN, more than 96 percent of the groundwater in Gaza is “unfit for human consumption.” Since the extreme blockade of humanitarian aid in Gaza, resources have been severely limited, making safe, clean water difficult to find. Waterborne diseases such as polio have been rising due to the contamination of the water, posing huge risks to an already vulnerable population.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza. Having staff and resources on the ground has enabled Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza as the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Operates Clean Water Stations for 44,500+ Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE November 9, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is currently operating clean water stations in shelter centers located in various areas of Gaza that serve more than 44,500 displaced Palestinians.

Clean water stations have been set up in schools and refugee centers located in central and southern Gaza, including Al-Zawaideh, Deir Al-Balah, Al-Khawalda, Al-Sawarha, Al-Maghazi Camp and Al-Nuseirat Camp. These stations ensure clean water access to thousands of Palestinians displaced within Gaza since October 7.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, the charity was operating 400 water tanks across Gaza prior to October 7 which were refilled weekly to provide clean water access to families in need. Due to the recent bombardment and blockade of the Gaza Strip, the charity rerouted its available water resources in the region to serve the needs of the displaced population.

“We are grateful to our team in Gaza who were able to pivot quickly to address the evolving situation on the ground,” Bashir said. “We are also thankful to our donors who enable us to provide clean water to as many people as possible during this critical time.”

Access to clean water has been one of the biggest challenges in Gaza, even prior to the recent crisis. According to the UN, more than 96 percent of the groundwater in Gaza is “unfit for human consumption.” Since the recent blockade and bombardment of Gaza, resources have been severely limited, making safe, clean water even harder to find. Cholera is rising due to contaminated water, posing huge risks to a population that has been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in overcrowded shelters.

Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating desalination plants and 400 water tanks in Gaza . Having staff and resources on the ground enables Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza as the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

New Water Filtration Plant Benefits 5,000 Villagers in Pakistan

???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN October 3, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently installed a water filtration plant in the Pakka Malana village in Pakistan that provides safe, clean water to approximately 5,000 people.

The village, which is located in the Dera Ismail Khan District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, relies heavily on tap water for its needs, but much of that water is contaminated, according to Baitulmaal Program Manager Elizabeth Sohail.

“Many people were suffering from hepatitis, typhus, diarrhea and other water-borne diseases due to the poor quality of the water there,” Sohail said. “The community was largely impoverished and unable to afford the necessary filtration. Thanks to our generous donors, they now have access to safe, clean water.”

According to the UN, approximately 70 percent of households in Pakistan drink bacterially contaminated water. UNESCO estimates that 40 percent of all diseases in Pakistan are due to unsanitary drinking water. This has led to stunting in children and over 53,000 child deaths per year. Recent floods have further contaminated water sources, posing even greater risk to vulnerable families in need.

Baitulmaal has constructed over 330 donor-funded wells in various regions of Pakistan, including Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. In addition to water access projects, Baitulmaal responds to emergencies such as recent flooding and earthquakes, and provides food and seasonal aid. Emergency Aid Delivered to Flood Victims in Pakistan, More Aid Underway

???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN August 26, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food and water to 520 families impacted by severe flooding in Pakistan.

Families living in the hard-hit Sindh province as well as in Balochistan received emergency assistance. Clean water, cooked meals and food parcels containing items such as flour, rice and lentils were distributed to affected families.

Many families continue to be displaced from their homes due to the massive floods, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, an international humanitarian nonprofit who has been responding to the floods since July.

“So many families are surrounded by knee-deep water,” Sohail said. “Our teams are making sure they are safe and have enough food and water to sustain them. But the flooding continues and many more families are in need.”

According to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 2.3 million people in Pakistan have been affected by heavy rains and flooding since mid-June. The death toll continues to rise, with at least 900 fatalities so far. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, crops have been flooded, livestock has perished and damage to roads have impacted services as well as aid efforts.

Baitulmaal is on the ground in Pakistan continuing to help affected families, with another phase of relief efforts underway. To contribute to emergency flood relief efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

31,000 Syrians Gain Access to Water, Bathrooms

???? More photos below… ????

TELL ABYAD, SYRIA, January 21, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the construction of wells and renovation of school bathrooms in five camps in Tell Abyad, Syria that benefit 31,259 people, including 4,200 children.

The schools are located in five areas in northern Syria that are home to approximately 160,000 displaced Syrians. They are:

  • Al Saoura School, which serves 550 students
  • Al Maksoura School, which serves 700 students
  • Kormaza School, which serves 950 students
  • Jahjah School, which serves 1200 students
  • Al Gurun School, which serves 800 students

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, many of these schools were inoperable due to the lack of water and sanitation.

“Renovating the school facilities enables children to return to a healthy environment conducive to learning,” Sohail said. “The wells are also accessible to area residents who have been struggling with water shortages. These two improvements combine to improve the lives of displaced Syrians in Tell Abyad.”

Construction was slightly delayed due to snowfall in the region, which has impacted many of the nearly 6.7 million Syrians that are internally displaced. According to the UN, 90 percent live in poverty, and more than 70 percent are without regular access to safe drinking water. Approximately 7,000 schools have been damaged or destroyed, leaving over 2 million children out of school.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Syria mobilizing aid after destructive storms, delivering food, digging wells, supporting orphans, helping students and bringing joy through the distribution of zakat, clothing and gifts. 20,000 Palestinians Benefit from Clean Water Tanks in Gaza

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE, January 18, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the delivery and set-up of 100 water tanks in the Gaza Strip, bringing the total number of water tanks the charity operates in the area to 400.

Each tank provides access to free, clean water to approximately 50 individuals, or 7 families, throughout the year for an estimated 20,000 total beneficiaries.

The tanks are located in the following areas:

  • North governorate: (Beit Hanoun, Jablia Camp, Abraj Al Nada)
  • Gaza governorate: (Moghraqa, Al Zatoon)
  • Middle governorate: (Al Brouk, Um Dhair, Al Maghazi camp, Al Sawarha, Al Zawiada, Wadi Al Salqa, Deir Al Balah camp, Al Buraij refugees, Al Nusierat camp, Joher Al Diek)
  • Khan Younis governorate: (Nahr Al Bared)
  • Rafah governorate: (the Swedish Village, Al Mawasi)

Tanks are refilled weekly, according to Baitulmaal program manager Elizabeth Sohail, and may be refilled more frequently depending on need.

“Without these tanks, many families have no other choice but to drink from polluted sources, putting their health at risk.” Sohail said. “Access to safe, potable water is a basic right, and these tanks deliver on that promise.”

Human rights experts recently warned that water in Gaza is “slowly poisoning” its residents. Water pollution is a leading cause of child mortality and accounts for a quarter of all illnesses in the area. Approximately 98% of groundwater is unfit to drink — often contaminated by sewage or seawater. According to the UN, only 10 percent of Gazans have access to safe drinking water.

5,200 Yemenis Benefit From New Deep Water Well

???? More photos below… ????

ADEN, YEMEN, January 13, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the construction of a deep water well in the Ma’asher camp that provides clean, safe water to 5,200 Yemenis.

The deep water well supplies potable water to approximately 600 displaced and vulnerable families in the Marib governorate. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, this area of Yemen suffers from water scarcity, aging infrastructure and other harmful impacts of war and extreme poverty.

“This camp has seen an influx of newly displaced people, and access to water has been a major challenge,” Sohail said. “This new deep water well provides clean, piped water and can potentially improve the overall health of struggling Yemenis.”

In 2000, the World Bank stated that Yemen was experiencing a “dire and worsening water situation.” Since then, conflict, climate change, a cholera epidemic and a global pandemic have left the country’s residents, many of whom are internally displaced, increasingly vulnerable. According to the UN, over 80 percent of the population relies on humanitarian aid, and more than half of the population does not have access to clean water.

Since 2018, Baitulmaal has sent over $10.6 million in aid that provided meals, antibiotics, medical supplies, winter relief, water, hygiene kits and COVID-19 assistance to Yemen.
