BEIRUT, LEBANON January 1, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided financial support to 18 educational centers in Lebanon to help cover operational costs, equipment and staff salaries.

These educational centers are located across Akkar, the Bekaa, and Beirut. According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, the project aims to access education, advance gender equality, and support lifelong learning through vocational training for youth and adults.

“We’ve seen firsthand how this support has helped schools stay open and teachers stay motivated,” Sherif said. “It’s not just funding—it’s stability for hundreds of students and their families.”

According to UNICEF, 1 in 4 children in Lebanon is currently out of school, making support for educational infrastructure and staffing critical to preventing long-term learning gaps.

GAZA, PALESTINE December 14, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is currently sending winter relief and other emergency humanitarian aid into Gaza through Rafah Crossing. A total of 14 aid trucks in Baitulmaal’s first humanitarian aid convoy from Egypt made it into Gaza.

These shipments contain items such as 40,000 winter clothing items and 120 tonnes of flour. This aid has been unloaded into our warehouse in Gaza and is being prepared for distribution in the coming weeks.

Baitulmaal’s first convoy of aid will bring in direly needed humanitarian aid such as food, shelter items, and winter supplies, with medical aid also on the way.

Since October 7, Israeli forces have killed more than 18,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza. Prior to October 7, Gaza relied on more than 500 humanitarian aid trucks per day to meet the needs of the population. Since then, only a fraction of aid trucks have been allowed in. Hundreds of trucks are currently waiting for a green light at the Rafah border crossing in Egypt, ready to deliver lifesaving aid to 2.3 million besieged Palestinians.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. Prior to October 7, Baitulmaal had been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza . Having staff and resources on the ground enables Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza as the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

More photos below

WAJIR, KENYA November 26, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency aid to 8,500 Kenyans after a flash flood disaster in Kenya.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries included elderly, displaced families, and orphans. Each family received tarps, mosquito nets, hygiene supplies, and more.

“After losing their homes, families found themselves without essential needs,” Sherif said. “It was crucial to provide supplies to families in this difficult time to prevent any further deaths or illnesses caused by the flash floods.”

According to the UN office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA), the rainfall caused infrastructural damage, resulting in deaths and the displacement of 136,025 people due to homes being swept away by the intensified water. There have also been reports of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea in flood-affected areas.

In addition to responding to the recent floods in Kenya, Baitulmaal has also provided fresh meat for Udhiyah, and Ramadan Food Packages in Kenya. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

Over 4,270 Afghanistan Earthquake Survivors Receive Emergency Aid

More photos below

HERAT, AFGHANISTAN November 20, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency aid to more than 4,270 earthquake survivors in Afghanistan after multiple earthquakes struck the region last month.

Approximately 500 families in the Herat province received warm clothes and blankets to protect themselves from the cold weather. An estimated 70 percent of  beneficiaries were women and children according to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal.

“Most of the affected families lost their means of protection and shelter due to the multiple earthquakes that struck,” Sohail said. “With the temperatures dropping, women and children were at risk of falling ill without warm clothes and blankets.”

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Herat province in western Afghanistan was hit by the first of a series of four deadly earthquakes, all measuring 6.3 magnitude. According to UNICEF, almost 1,500 people were reportedly killed in Herat and the surrounding districts. In the three most affected districts, around 150,000 people either completely lost their homes or their homes were severely damaged.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Afghanistan mobilizing aid to affected areas. In addition to delivering emergency aid after earthquakes and floods, Baitulmaal provides food, winter supplies and income generation projects. Children Receive Psychosocial Support During Ongoing Crisis in Gaza

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE November 15, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is currently providing psychosocial support to hundreds of displaced Palestinian children seeking refuge in shelter centers across the Gaza Strip.

Displaced children are receiving psychosocial support through toys, activities, and friendly faces in shelter centers and schools located in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah. According to Ahmed Sheriff, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, the mental health of children is an unseen crisis that is unfolding in Gaza.

“These children are living through the horrors of war,” Sheriff said. “Our compassionate donors have been able to put a smile on their faces during these dark days and helped ease some of their suffering.”

In less than six weeks, Israel has killed more than 11,000 Palestinians. According to the UN, of those killed, about 41 percent are children and 25 percent are women. On average, one child is killed and two are injured every 10 minutes. For many children, this is not the first experience of violence in their short lives. A 16 year old child in Gaza today would have been born under an occupation and lived through violence in 2008, 2012, 2014, 2021, and the current crisis in 2023.

In addition to psychosocial support for displaced Palestinian children, Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza distributing shelter kits, food, hygiene supplies, clean water and other emergency aid since October 7.

Prior to October 7, Baitulmaal had been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza . Baitulmaal Provides Medical Supplies Benefitting 40,000 Patients in Gaza

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE November 12, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided medical supplies to support Gaza’s medical sector, benefitting 40,000 patients in Gaza.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries included many wounded children, women, and disabled people. The health centers in Gaza received medical supplies, medicine, and ambulance support.

“As the escalation in Gaza continues, the demand for medical supplies keeps growing,” Sherif said. “We must help the people of Gaza by providing the necessary medical equipment in operating rooms to better treat the wounded victims.”

After October 7, health authorities in Gaza reported the death toll increased to more than 5,500 deaths, more than half of them being children, women, and elderly people, in addition to injuring more than 15,500 others, most of them also children and women.

In addition to providing medical supplies to Gaza, Baitulmaal has been providing emergency aid, food, clean water stations, and psychosocial support for children.

Baitulmaal Operates Clean Water Stations for 44,500+ Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE November 9, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is currently operating clean water stations in shelter centers located in various areas of Gaza that serve more than 44,500 displaced Palestinians.

Clean water stations have been set up in schools and refugee centers located in central and southern Gaza, including Al-Zawaideh, Deir Al-Balah, Al-Khawalda, Al-Sawarha, Al-Maghazi Camp and Al-Nuseirat Camp. These stations ensure clean water access to thousands of Palestinians displaced within Gaza since October 7.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, the charity was operating 400 water tanks across Gaza prior to October 7 which were refilled weekly to provide clean water access to families in need. Due to the recent bombardment and blockade of the Gaza Strip, the charity rerouted its available water resources in the region to serve the needs of the displaced population.

“We are grateful to our team in Gaza who were able to pivot quickly to address the evolving situation on the ground,” Bashir said. “We are also thankful to our donors who enable us to provide clean water to as many people as possible during this critical time.”

Access to clean water has been one of the biggest challenges in Gaza, even prior to the recent crisis. According to the UN, more than 96 percent of the groundwater in Gaza is “unfit for human consumption.” Since the recent blockade and bombardment of Gaza, resources have been severely limited, making safe, clean water even harder to find. Cholera is rising due to contaminated water, posing huge risks to a population that has been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in overcrowded shelters.

Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating desalination plants and 400 water tanks in Gaza . Having staff and resources on the ground enables Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

10,000+ Palestinians Receive Food, Emergency Aid in Khan Younis

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE November 3, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency aid to more than 10,000 Palestinians in Khan Younis.

In addition to providing items such as blankets, food packages and warm meals to displaced Palestinians, Baitulmaal provided water and produce for meals to support 1,200 healthcare workers, patients and their families at the Nasser Medical Complex.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, the charity is also providing daily warm meals for more than 4,600 displaced Palestinians living in two shelter centers in Khan Younis.

“Bakeries have been bombed, markets are empty, and access to food is becoming increasingly difficult,” Sohail said. “These daily warm meals are lifelines for those struggling with hunger, especially displaced Palestinians that have very few resources to help them cope.”

According to the UN’s World Food Programme, Gaza is facing widespread hunger as food systems collapse. An estimated ten percent of necessary food supplies have entered Gaza since the beginning of the recent blockade, leaving many Palestinians on the brink of starvation.

Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza . Emergency Aid Distributed to 4,800+ Palestinians in Deir al Balah

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE October 23, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency aid to more than 4,800 Palestinians in central Gaza.

Emergency aid such as food packages, mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits, baby formula, and hot meals were distributed to residents sheltering in place in Deir al Balah, as well as to those who were recently displaced.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, many Palestinians in Gaza are unable to secure basic needs during the ongoing blockade and bombardment of Gaza.

“Families were driven from their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs, while many of those sheltering in place have little to survive on as the situation deteriorates all around them,” Sohail said. “Thanks to our donors and our teams on the ground, we are able to deliver crucial aid now when it is needed most.”

Baitulmaal Distributes Aid in Gaza: Update

FAQ’s and more photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE October 11, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is distributing emergency aid to families impacted by the recent escalation of violence in Palestine.

Local teams are on the ground in Gaza delivering aid such as hot meals, food packages and other emergency supplies to displaced families as well as families that are sheltering in place in their homes, according to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal. Specific locations will not be disclosed due to security concerns.

“Our field workers inside Gaza are among the few who have accepted the risk of distributing aid during this crisis,” said Sheriff. “We are purchasing emergency aid supplies inside Gaza because there is no way to import items due to the blockade at this time.”

The team has received reports that a building behind Al-Shifa Hospital was bombed and its prenatal newborn unit was damaged. Nasser Hospital was also affected when the nearby area was struck.

Prior to the recent escalation in violence, Gazans faced routine power outages, limited water access, food insecurity and poverty due to an ongoing blockade. According to the UN, more than 75 percent of Gazans relied on humanitarian aid in an area commonly considered the world’s largest open air prison. In recent days, food, fuel, electricity and water have been completely cut off, while hospitals rely on fuel generators to continue life-saving services.

Baitulmaal provides food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine. The charity also operates 400 water tanks in Gaza.

Baitulmaal will continue to provide aid during the current crisis in Gaza and prays for the safety of all innocent lives caught in the crossfire. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.
