Emergency Aid Distributed to 4,800+ Palestinians in Deir al Balah

More photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE October 23, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency aid to more than 4,800 Palestinians in central Gaza.

Emergency aid such as food packages, mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits, baby formula, and hot meals were distributed to residents sheltering in place in Deir al Balah, as well as to those who were recently displaced.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, many Palestinians in Gaza are unable to secure basic needs during the ongoing blockade and bombardment of Gaza.

“Families were driven from their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs, while many of those sheltering in place have little to survive on as the situation deteriorates all around them,” Sohail said. “Thanks to our donors and our teams on the ground, we are able to deliver crucial aid now when it is needed most.”

Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade, providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza . Having staff and resources on the ground enables Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza once the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Distributes Aid in Gaza: Update

FAQ’s and more photos below

GAZA, PALESTINE October 11, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is distributing emergency aid to families impacted by the recent escalation of violence in Palestine.

Local teams are on the ground in Gaza delivering aid such as hot meals, food packages and other emergency supplies to displaced families as well as families that are sheltering in place in their homes, according to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal. Specific locations will not be disclosed due to security concerns.

“Our field workers inside Gaza are among the few who have accepted the risk of distributing aid during this crisis,” said Sheriff. “We are purchasing emergency aid supplies inside Gaza because there is no way to import items due to the blockade at this time.”

The team has received reports that a building behind Al-Shifa Hospital was bombed and its prenatal newborn unit was damaged. Nasser Hospital was also affected when the nearby area was struck.

Prior to the recent escalation in violence, Gazans faced routine power outages, limited water access, food insecurity and poverty due to an ongoing blockade. According to the UN, more than 75 percent of Gazans relied on humanitarian aid in an area commonly considered the world’s largest open air prison. In recent days, food, fuel, electricity and water have been completely cut off, while hospitals rely on fuel generators to continue life-saving services.

Baitulmaal provides food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine. The charity also operates 400 water tanks in Gaza.

Baitulmaal will continue to provide aid during the current crisis in Gaza and prays for the safety of all innocent lives caught in the crossfire. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

Displaced Syrian Families Receive Food for 195,300 Meals

More photos below

IDLIB, SYRIA September 19, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered food packages for 195,300 meals to displaced Syrian families.

Approximately 350 families received food packages that included items such as cooking oil, rice, flour, lentils and canned goods. Beneficiaries lived in three camps and two communities in Maa’raat Masrin in northern Syria.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, most of these camps were established after displacement waves in early 2020 and were impacted by massive earthquakes earlier this year.

“These families live in extreme poverty and struggle with hunger on a routine basis,” said Sohail. “Every day without food is an emergency. Thanks to generous donors, vulnerable families had enough food supplies to help alleviate hunger in these difficult times.”

Ongoing conflict has displaced more than 6.7 million people — including 2.5 million children — within Syria. Another 6.6 million Syrians live as refugees in neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkiye. According to the UN, Syria is among the 10 most food insecure countries globally, with a staggering 12 million people considered to be food insecure.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in northwest Syria delivering food, rebuilding schools, completing water access projects, and responding to emergencies including the recent earthquakes. Hospitals and clinics in northern Syria were among the recipients of a $5.35M medical aid shipment. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Joins Coalition Promoting Maternal, Child Healthcare

Watch the campaign launch video below

DALLAS, TEXAS September 7, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is proud to announce its partnership with the ‘For Mama’ campaign promoting maternal, newborn and child health alongside a coalition of U.S. and U.K. faith-inspired philanthropies and donors, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

‘For Mama’ is a new social media campaign that aims to raise awareness of the high rates of maternal deaths which impact vulnerable women around the world, along with solutions to prevent them.

“Most of these deaths are entirely preventable with existing tools and access to consistent, quality care throughout pregnancy,” the campaign website reads. “The campaign challenges all of us to act – and take a campaign pledge – ‘for mama’ to ensure that life-saving interventions reach the mothers and babies who need them most.”

UNICEF estimates that nearly 94 percent of maternal deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, while maternal mortality in humanitarian settings is nearly double the world average. (UNFPA) In the U.S., Black women are nearly three times more likely to die during pregnancy than white women. (CDC 2021)

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, the charity has a long history of supporting the health and wellness of women and children in underserved communities around the world.

“Baitulmaal is committed to raising awareness about the struggles women face in accessing quality healthcare, nutrition and other basic necessities that help them and their families thrive,” Sohail said. “We are honored to join this campaign and encourage everyone to take the pledge in support of all the ‘mamas’ in our lives and around the world.”

180 Patients Regain Sight After Receiving Cataract Surgery in Uganda

More photos below

KAMPALA, UGANDA  August 20, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided free cataract surgery to 180 underprivileged patients in Uganda.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, patients came from across the country, including impoverished individuals, people with disabilities, the elderly and some children.

“Many individuals, especially in rural areas, lack timely and appropriate eye care services,” Sherif said. “Access to healthcare is a right that everyone deserves regardless of their socioeconomic background.”

The national poverty rate in Uganda is approximately 30 percent. An estimated 42,000 Ugandans suffer from cataract blindness requiring immediate treatment. Delays in seeking treatment contribute to the high incidence of blindness in the country according to the National Library of Medicine.

1,671 Displaced Syrians Receive Hygiene, Water Supplies

More photos below

IDLIB, SYRIA August 15, 2023 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided hygiene kits and clean water access to 1,671 displaced Syrians.

Approximately 400 families living in Kafr Yahmoon, Khazzan Camp, Zaitoun Camp and Maarshurin in northern Syria benefited from the aid. Hygiene kits contained essential items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers, and other personal hygiene products. Each family also received access to 5 barrels of clean water.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries were impacted by earthquakes that struck Turkiye and Syria earlier this year, leaving already struggling families at risk.

“Syrian families are living in precarious situations without access to basic needs like water and sanitation,” Sohail said. “This has led to a high risk of waterborne disease and other health issues. These aid deliveries are essential to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable families.”

Syrians have been facing ongoing conflict in addition to natural disasters in recent years. Since 2011, more than 6 million Syrians have fled the country and 6.7 million are internally displaced

According to the UN, 14.6 million people need humanitarian assistance in 2022, an increase of 1.2 million from 2021. The recent earthquake displaced families yet again and left them struggling to access food, water, and other basic needs.

More photos below

DALLAS, TX August 4, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 121,231 meals to impoverished families in 14 different countries across Europe, Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah.

Approximately 20,341 families were given fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered cows, sheep, or goats. Beneficiaries live in countries such as Afghanistan, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Togo, and Yemen and include Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as well as Syrian and Uyghur refugees in Turkiye.

Many of the beneficiaries included orphans, displaced people, women-headed households, and people with disabilities, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal.

“Fresh meat is often hard to afford for people struggling with extreme poverty, especially for displaced people or people with disabilities or other hardships,” said Sohail. “Our donors provided moments of joy for these families and made Eid even more special.”

According to the World Health Organization, global hunger rose to 828 million by the end of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest State of Food Security and Nutrition report shows the world is moving backwards in efforts to eliminate hunger and malnutrition.
