160,000 Meals Made Possible During Udhiyah Season 2022

???? More photos below… ????

DALLAS, TEXAS August 10, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for approximately 159,968 meals to impoverished families around the world during the Udhiyah season that ran from July 9 through July 12, 2022.

Approximately 22,606 families received fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered cows, goats or sheep. Beneficiaries live in countries such as Afghanistan, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria and Yemen and include Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as well as Syrian and Uyghur refugees in Turkey.

The practice of Udhiyah, or sacrifice, takes place during the annual pilgrimage undertaken by Muslims to Mecca known as the Hajj. It is an act of worship that extends compassion to those in need through the distribution of fresh meat.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program director at Baitulmaal, all of the families who received the udhiyah distribution face high levels of food insecurity.

“Meat continues to be a luxury for many families suffering from hunger,” Sohail said. “Our donor community came through to ensure that the less fortunate had their rightful share of meat this Udhiyah.”

Continued economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with the war in Ukraine has led to a global food crisis, according to the World Health Organization. Food prices have soared while supply has deteriorated in many of the most vulnerable regions of the world. Climate and weather emergencies like drought, flooding and earthquakes have further exacerbated difficulties faced by struggling communities.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality.
