249,240 Ramadan Meals For Displaced Families in Syria

???? More photos below… ????

IDLIB, SYRIA April 11, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of food packages that provide 249,240 meals to internally displaced families in Northern Syria in time for the Ramadan season.

Approximately 670 families living in Idlib, Ma’arat Masrin and other areas in Northern Syria received the food packages. Contents included rice, flour, lentils, pasta, canned vegetables, dates and cooking oil. According to Baitulmaal program manager Elizabeth Sohail, the majority of food package recipients were women and children who recently settled in refugee camps in Northern Syria.

“It is increasingly difficult for these families to secure basic necessities now that food prices are soaring,” Sohail said. “They were incredibly grateful to receive items like cooking oil and rice which they might not have been able to purchase otherwise.”

The Syrian crisis has left more than 6.9 million Syrians internally displaced and another 5.1 million as refugees. An estimated 13.4 million people living within Syria – including those who are internally displaced – are in need of humanitarian assistance. The UN refugee agency calls it “the biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time and a continuing cause for suffering.”

Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The charity has also been on the ground in Syria mobilizing aid after destructive storms, delivering food, digging wells, supporting orphans, helping students and distributing seasonal aid. First Charity NFT Islamic Art Gallery Opens December 26 in Chicago

Chicago, December 21, 2021 – Four Muslim artists are featured in the Giving is Beautiful charity art gallery opening on December 26, 2021, at the MAS-ICNA convention being held at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Artists Ruby Jaffrey, Shayma Al-Shiri, Qasim Arif and Mustafa Horton each contributed three original artworks ranging in style from Arabic calligraphy, calligraphy-themed art, abstract realism and abstract art. Each artist minted non-fungible tokens for their artwork on the popular NFT marketplace OpenSea and are donating all royalties to Baitulmaal, the charity behind the art project.

Visitors to the art gallery can bid on prints of the digital art and a portion of the proceeds from the auctions will also be donated to Baitulmaal.

“We’ve been wanting to launch a project that supports the creative community while also benefiting people in need around the world,” said John Janney, Baitulmaal communications director and chief curator for the Giving is Beautiful initiative. “With art as the vehicle, donors can enjoy the beauty of their contributions on their walls, in their digital collections and in their hearts.”

Two other pieces will be shown during the convention. One is an immersive video art installation by videographer Chance Issa that features footage from humanitarian aid deliveries funded by Baitulmaal donors as well as clips of popular social influencers like Khaled Beydoun and Linda Sarsour talking about how they engage with beauty in the world and how they foster inner beauty through giving and other charitable acts.

The other art piece is an interactive art installation featuring a custom-built vending machine that offers charity opportunities instead of snacks and sodas. Visitors can select from 30 different giving options, such as supporting winter relief, water access, orphan support or education. Artist and Baitulmaal graphic designer Mustafa Horton designed the colorful mosaic-themed art that covers the inside and outside of the vending machine.

Art enthusiasts outside of Chicago wanting to see or purchase selections can visit givingisbeautiful.org. The site also offers an application for artists interested in joining the collection.

Fresh Meat for More Than 300,000 Meals Provided to Families in Need

???? More photos below… ????

DALLAS, TX August 27, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 308,008 meals to impoverished families in poverty-stricken and conflict-ridden regions around the world during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 16,504 families received portions of meat from cows, goats and other livestock in countries such as Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said that while the need in these countries has been on the rise, so has the compassion of donors.

“Many of the families we help have been hit by tragedy after tragedy,” Sohail said. “Each package of meat served more than food; it also provided a glimmer of hope to those who’ve had little to look forward to in this difficult year.”

According to the United Nations, acute food insecurity has soared 40 percent this year due to conflict, climate change, rising food prices and the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting a record 270 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that more than two billion people worldwide suffer from “hidden hunger,” defined as a deficiency in nutrients such as iron, zinc, and folic acid from a lack of diversity in diets.

For those struggling with extreme poverty and food insecurity, having meat to eat is a rare occurrence. In many Muslim-majority countries, nutrient-rich meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah. This year, Baitulmaal distributed approximately 54 tons of fresh, locally-sourced meat on behalf of donors wishing to fulfill the Islamic traditions of sacrifice, charity, and good-will towards others.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality.
