New Water Filtration Plant Benefits 5,000 Villagers in Pakistan

???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN October 3, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently installed a water filtration plant in the Pakka Malana village in Pakistan that provides safe, clean water to approximately 5,000 people.

The village, which is located in the Dera Ismail Khan District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, relies heavily on tap water for its needs, but much of that water is contaminated, according to Baitulmaal Program Manager Elizabeth Sohail.

“Many people were suffering from hepatitis, typhus, diarrhea and other water-borne diseases due to the poor quality of the water there,” Sohail said. “The community was largely impoverished and unable to afford the necessary filtration. Thanks to our generous donors, they now have access to safe, clean water.”

According to the UN, approximately 70 percent of households in Pakistan drink bacterially contaminated water. UNESCO estimates that 40 percent of all diseases in Pakistan are due to unsanitary drinking water. This has led to stunting in children and over 53,000 child deaths per year. Recent floods have further contaminated water sources, posing even greater risk to vulnerable families in need.

Baitulmaal has constructed over 330 donor-funded wells in various regions of Pakistan, including Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. In addition to water access projects, Baitulmaal responds to emergencies such as recent flooding and earthquakes, and provides food and seasonal aid. ???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN August 26, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food and water to 520 families impacted by severe flooding in Pakistan.

Families living in the hard-hit Sindh province as well as in Balochistan received emergency assistance. Clean water, cooked meals and food parcels containing items such as flour, rice and lentils were distributed to affected families.

Many families continue to be displaced from their homes due to the massive floods, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, an international humanitarian nonprofit who has been responding to the floods since July.

“So many families are surrounded by knee-deep water,” Sohail said. “Our teams are making sure they are safe and have enough food and water to sustain them. But the flooding continues and many more families are in need.”

According to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 2.3 million people in Pakistan have been affected by heavy rains and flooding since mid-June. The death toll continues to rise, with at least 900 fatalities so far. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, crops have been flooded, livestock has perished and damage to roads have impacted services as well as aid efforts.

???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN August 1, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 39,195 meals to impoverished families in Pakistan as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah last month.

Approximately 1,170 families living in the Sujawal and Naushero Feroze Districts in Sindh Province as well in the Mansehra District of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province received fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered cows. The distribution occurred during monsoon season that flooded many villages, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Heavy rains did not dampen smiles and enthusiasm for this special holiday,” Sohail siad. “Thanks to our donors, we were able to successfully deliver fresh meat to our brothers and sisters in Pakistan despite the downpour.”

In many Muslim-majority countries, fresh meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah, a practice that commemorates Prophet Abraham’s sacrifice and takes place during the Hajj pilgrimage. This year, Baitulmaal distributed fresh meat for approximately 160,000 meals to beneficiaries in various poverty-stricken and conflict ridden areas of the world.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. KARACHI, PAKISTAN April 22, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered 600 food packages that provided approximately 241,200 meals to impoverished families in Pakistan during Ramadan.

More than 4,800 villagers living in the Sujawal, Mansehra and Noushero Feroze districts received the food packages in time for Ramadan. Food packages included rice, flour, sugar, lentils and canned goods. According to Baitulmaal program director Elizabeth Sohail, many of the families live in remote areas and find it increasingly difficult to procure basic necessities.

“Food availability is decreasing and prices are soaring everywhere, and this affects the poorest families the most,” Sohail said. “Our donors’ generosity enabled us to give these families food packages that last them through Ramadan.”

Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The charity also provides food, water, healthcare and other humanitarian aid to people in Palestine. 8,000 Pakistanis Receive Winter Supplies

???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, February 1, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered winter supplies to 8,000 impoverished Pakistanis in three districts impacted by winter weather.

Coats, blankets, shoes, gloves and shawls were distributed to locals in the Sujawal District in Sindh Province, Manshera District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Harnai District in Quetta. High levels of poverty in these areas leave many people vulnerable to frigid temperatures, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Some of the families we reach live in mountainous, snowy regions where it is difficult to access winter supplies and other items they may need,” Sohail said. “These supplies came in time to help them stay warm.”

Poverty rates were improving in Pakistan prior to the pandemic, but the global health crisis has since sent 2 million more Pakistanis below the poverty line, according to the World Bank. Many live in areas affected by climate crises and weather emergencies such as monsoons and earthquakes. Heavy snowfall was responsible for more than 20 deaths in Pakistan last month alone.

Baitulmaal Responds to Earthquake in Pakistan

???? More photos below… ????

QUETTA, PAKISTAN, October 20, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently provided emergency food provisions and other aid to 100 families impacted by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern part of Pakistan.

Families received hygiene supplies and a one-month supply of staples such as flour, rice, lentils and cooking oil after losing most of their belongings in the quake. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, many of the families continue to rely on humanitarian assistance as they recover from the disaster.

“Houses collapsed to the ground, and yet many of the families continue to live in them because they have nowhere else to go,” Sohail said. “This food gives them one less thing to worry about as they begin to rebuild.”

The earthquake struck on October 7, 2021 while residents slept in the Harnai district near the Afghan border. The quake killed at least 27 people and injured over 300. More than 100 homes were fully or partially damaged and power was disrupted to the remote, mountainous region. Aftershocks continued to be felt in the following days.
