AMMAN, JORDAN, November 1, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed school supplies to 478 low-income or orphaned children in Jordan.

Students who attend various schools in Amman, Az-Zarqa, Mafreq, Irbid, Jerash and Balqa received school bags and supplies such as stationary and books ahead of the new school year. Many of the children live in refugee camps or belong to families with little or no source of income and a high number of dependent, disabled or elderly members. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, these supplies alleviate obstacles to sending children to school.

“Orphans and other vulnerable children in Jordan lack basic needs on a daily basis,” Sohail said. “Thanks to our donors, they now have the supplies they need to access the opportunities schooling provides – from nutrition to education to psychosocial support.”

Fresh Meat for More Than 300,000 Meals Provided to Families in Need

???? More photos below… ????

DALLAS, TX August 27, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 308,008 meals to impoverished families in poverty-stricken and conflict-ridden regions around the world during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 16,504 families received portions of meat from cows, goats and other livestock in countries such as Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said that while the need in these countries has been on the rise, so has the compassion of donors.

“Many of the families we help have been hit by tragedy after tragedy,” Sohail said. “Each package of meat served more than food; it also provided a glimmer of hope to those who’ve had little to look forward to in this difficult year.”

According to the United Nations, acute food insecurity has soared 40 percent this year due to conflict, climate change, rising food prices and the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting a record 270 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that more than two billion people worldwide suffer from “hidden hunger,” defined as a deficiency in nutrients such as iron, zinc, and folic acid from a lack of diversity in diets.

For those struggling with extreme poverty and food insecurity, having meat to eat is a rare occurrence. In many Muslim-majority countries, nutrient-rich meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah. This year, Baitulmaal distributed approximately 54 tons of fresh, locally-sourced meat on behalf of donors wishing to fulfill the Islamic traditions of sacrifice, charity, and good-will towards others.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. Jordanian Families Receive Fresh Meat for 10,080 Meals

AMMAN, JORDAN July 23, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 10,080 meals to families in Jordan during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 2,100 beneficiaries — including refugees, orphans, and low-income families — received portions of meat from locally-sourced sheep. The recipients lived in areas such as Amman, Irbid, Jerash, Al Zarqaa and Al Baqaa. Children also received Eid clothes to commemorate the Eid holiday.

Families, Orphans in Jordan Receive Food, Financial and Clothing Assistance

???? More photos below… ????

AMMAN, JORDAN, June 25, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food packages for 538,560 meals to 1,870 families in various areas of Jordan, in addition to zakat-al-fitr cash assistance to 1,020 families and Eid clothing gifted to 220 Jordanian orphans.

The food packages, which contained items such as rice, oil, beans, tea, sugar, and pasta, were distributed to vulnerable families and refugees in Amman, Irbid, Jerash, Al Zarqaa and Al Balqaa in Jordan. The aid came during the Ramadan season and prioritized families who live under the poverty line or those with female-headed households, a high number of dependents, disabled members, or whose head of household is unemployed and unable to afford the cost of basic necessities.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the current economic situation in Jordan has created more need than in previous years.

“More Jordanians are struggling with rising expenses while their salaries stagnate or disappear during the pandemic,” Sohail said. “Our donors are helping to alleviate some of these struggles by providing food and cash assistance and bringing joy to the most vulnerable amongst them: refugees and orphans.”

While Jordan is considered a middle-income country, multiple concurrent crises have taken a toll on its economy: the COVID-19 pandemic, Syrian refugee crisis, and weak social welfare programs. According to the World Bank, unemployment rates in Jordan rose to 24.7 percent in 2020. The unemployment rate for workers 24 and younger soared to 50 percent. An influx of refugees has further strained resources and contributed to a rise of those in need of humanitarian assistance in Jordan.

Baitulmaal distributed approximately 3.9 million meals this past Ramadan, and is preparing to provide more food and meat distributions for the upcoming Hajj season. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.
