1,700 Families in Türkiye Receive Winter Aid

GAZIANTEP, TÜRKIYE, January 15, 2025 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed winter relief kits to 9,650 people living in Türkiye and Syrian refugee camps.

Approximately 1700 families in Gaziantep, Nezb and Kiles received winter aid which included heating coal, blankets, mattresses, shelter materials and cushions to help families stay warm during the harsh winter months.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, most of the beneficiaries included orphan families, the elderly, children and women.

“In many of these camps, children sleep on bare floors with little to protect them from the cold,” Sherif said. “Providing warmth is not just a necessity — it’s a lifeline.”

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 1.5 million Syrian refugees currently reside in Türkiye, many of whom live in inadequately insulated shelters or informal settlements that offer limited protection against freezing winter temperatures.

In addition to providing winter relief in Türkiye, Baitulmaal has also delivered $5.35 million in emergency aid, Ramadan food packages, and supported Uyghur refugee students with back-to-school kits. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, please visit johnjanney.org/.

Winter Relief Distributed to Syrian Refugees in Turkish Camps and Caves

URFA, TURKEY, March 29, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed winter relief to Syrian refugee families who arrived at the Turkish border town of Urfa.

Approximately 180 families received two heavy winter blankets each to help keep them warm. Many of the families live in the Al Jebeen refugee camp, but more than half are sheltering in caves on the outskirts of the settlement. Living conditions are especially harsh during winter months, according to Yousef Abdallah, Baitulmaal’s National Fundraising Director who recently visited the area.

“Some families sleep alongside animals at night in exchange for caring for them during the day because they have no other way to survive,” Abdallah said. “They were so grateful for the winter blankets they received to help keep them warm inside these cold and drafty caves.”

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Syria still has the largest displaced population in the world. More than 6.7 million people — including 2.5 million children — are displaced within Syria. Another 6.6 million Syrians live as refugees in neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. More than 90 percent of refugees live in extreme poverty and lack essential needs and services such as food, water, shelter, and healthcare.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Syria mobilizing aid after destructive storms, delivering food, digging wells, supporting orphans, helping students and distributing zakat, clothing and gifts. 8,000 Pakistanis Receive Winter Supplies

???? More photos below… ????

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, February 1, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered winter supplies to 8,000 impoverished Pakistanis in three districts impacted by winter weather.

Coats, blankets, shoes, gloves and shawls were distributed to locals in the Sujawal District in Sindh Province, Manshera District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Harnai District in Quetta. High levels of poverty in these areas leave many people vulnerable to frigid temperatures, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Some of the families we reach live in mountainous, snowy regions where it is difficult to access winter supplies and other items they may need,” Sohail said. “These supplies came in time to help them stay warm.”

Poverty rates were improving in Pakistan prior to the pandemic, but the global health crisis has since sent 2 million more Pakistanis below the poverty line, according to the World Bank. Many live in areas affected by climate crises and weather emergencies such as monsoons and earthquakes. Heavy snowfall was responsible for more than 20 deaths in Pakistan last month alone.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare, educational support and other aid to people in Pakistan. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

1,500 Indians Receive Winter Warmth

???? More photos below… ????

BIHAR, INDIA, January 21, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed winter supplies to 1,500 people impacted by floods in northeastern India.

Families in Masurya, Mahalgaon, Baturbari and Belwa villages in the Araria district of Bihar  received heaters, blankets, clothing and shoes to protect against winter weather, which can dip as low as 0 degrees celsius in this region. Many of these families rely on humanitarian assistance, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

Natural disasters like recent floods and the ongoing pandemic have pushed more people into poverty in this region,” Sohail said. “Many caregivers just can’t afford winter items for their families, which makes me so thankful for our donors’ winter gifts.”

According to the World Bank, Bihar has one of the most densely populated areas of poor people in the world. Subsistence agriculture is the main source of income for approximately 70 percent of the population, but COVD-19 lockdowns impacted mobility during crucial harvest seasons. Frequent flooding further contributed to difficulties faced by 76 percent of the population.
