MEXICO CITY, MEXICO April 26, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 79,500 meals to families in Mexico in time for the Ramadan season.

Food packages were distributed to families living in Aragón, Toluca, Cuernavaca, and Tecamac. In addition to food packages, 1,500 of the meals were provided during community iftars in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Monterrey where families came together to break their fast with Baitulmaal.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, domestic programs manager at Baitulmaal, the majority of the beneficiaries included people with disabilities, the elderly, or single mothers.

Observing Ramadan in Mexico can be challenging for Muslims because of the small population,” Sohail said. “Our donors across the world stepped in to provide a sense of community to our brothers and sisters in Mexico.”

According to the Pew Research Center, there are an estimated 840,000 Muslims in Latin America, and this number is growing. As minorities, many struggle to practice their faith and meet their needs amidst the region’s growing poverty levels.

Baitulmaal has been in the region providing food assistance to families in need. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

BEIRUT, LEBANON April 24, 2024 —  Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided more than 371,900 meals to orphans and families in Lebanon in time for the Ramadan season.

Approximately 1,476 families received food packages that contained essentials such as rice, sugar, lentils, chickpeas, salt, spaghetti, vegetable oil, and beans. According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, these families included 262 donor-sponsored orphan families residing in Sidon and Tyre, and 93 additional orphan families living in Palestinian refugee camps.

“With the ongoing economic collapse that Lebanon is facing, families struggle to afford food as the prices continue to rise,” Bashir said. “Our donors alleviated these families’ stress during Ramadan so they didn’t have to worry whether they’ll have food on the table every night.”

According to the World Bank, the Lebanon crisis is classified as one of the top 10 most severe economic  crises globally since the 19th century. Lebanon is also home to Syrian, Palestinian, and other refugees, and approximately 74 per cent of the population living in poverty according to the UN.

LOME, TOGO April 22, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 79,800 meals to families in Togo in time for the Ramadan season.

Food packages that included items such as rice, pasta, beans, canned goods, tea, and cooking oil were delivered to families in the Lome region.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, over 600 of these meals were provided during a community iftar where families came together to break their fast with Baitulmaal.

“Families in Togo have endured severe acute food insecurity over the years,” said Bashir. “Our donors generously filled stomachs and hearts with compassion this Ramadan.”

According to the World Food Programme, food security in Togo has sharply deteriorated in 2024. Key contributing factors include spillover effects from the Sahel crisis, inflation of food and agricultural inputs due to the Ukrainian crisis, and extreme effects of the climate crisis.

In addition to this distrubution in Togo, Baitulmaal has previously provided fresh meat for Udhiyah and Ramadan packages. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

Baitulmaal Distributes Safe-Drinking Water to 10K Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

GAZA, PALESTINE April 19, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 50,000 liters of safe-drinking water in Gaza that served approximately 10,000 Palestinians.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, the beneficiaries included approximately 2,000 families living in the Jabalia refugee camp in North Gaza. These families have been forced out of their homes and internally displaced after decades of severe bombardment.

“Women and children gathered around the water trucks eagerly filling their containers with fresh water,” Sherif said. “For many, this was the first time in weeks they were able to access clean water.”

According to the UN, more than 96 percent of the groundwater in Gaza is “unfit for human consumption.” Since the extreme blockade of humanitarian aid in Gaza, resources have been severely limited, making safe, clean water difficult to find. Waterborne diseases such as polio have been rising due to the contamination of the water, posing huge risks to an already vulnerable population.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7. Baitulmaal has been working in Palestine for more than a decade providing food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine, in addition to operating 400 water tanks in Gaza. Having staff and resources on the ground has enabled Baitulmaal to quickly mobilize emergency aid from existing stock within Gaza to families in need.

Baitulmaal continues to provide aid during the current crisis and will deliver more aid into Gaza as the situation allows. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to Baitulmaal’s efforts in Palestine, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

ACCRA, GHANA April 17, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 69,000 meals to families in Ghana in time for the Ramadan season.

Food packages that included items such as rice, pasta, beans, canned goods, tea, and cooking oil were provided to families in the Accra region.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, over 600 of these meals were provided during a community iftar where families came together to break their fast with Baitulmaal.

“The generosity and compassion of our donors is limitless,” Bashir said. “Thanks to them, mothers in Ghana went to bed every night knowing there will be food for their children the next day.”

According to the World Food Programme (WFP), poverty is a major cause of hunger and malnutrition in Ghana. Despite rapid urbanization, poverty and food insecurity are caused by inefficient food systems. Farmers face challenges from climate change, low prices, or poor road infrastructure.

In addition to this distrubution in Ghana, Baitulmaal has previously provided fresh meat for Udhiyah and Ramadan packages. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.

KARACHI, PAKISTAN April 15, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages that provided 240,000 meals to families in Pakistan in time for the Ramadan season.

Food packages were delivered to approximately families living in various villages in the Sindh province. The packages included items such as rice, flour, salt, vermicelli, spices, lentils, and cooking oil.

According to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal, beneficiaries included many families with young children and the elderly.

“Families smiled from ear to ear as they received their food package just in time for Ramadan,” Bashir said. “This month will be a time of reflection and a time of nourishment for families in Pakistan.”

In addition to food assistance in Pakistan, Baitulmaal responds to emergencies such as flooding and earthquakes, provides seasonal aid, and facilitates water access projects such as water filtration plants and wells. RAFAH, PALESTINE March 10, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency humanitarian aid to over 112,000 displaced Palestinians in Gaza after the successful entry of Baitulmaal’s third aid convoy from Egypt.

Ten trucks crossed into Gaza from the Rafah border crossing carrying humanitarian aid such as 1,200 mattresses, 800 food packages, 800 blankets, 595 rolls of tarpaulin (221K sq m), 400 hygiene kits, 400 mats, and 400 tents.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, conditions in Gaza were assessed to determine the most urgent humanitarian aid needs before securing and mobilizing the necessary supplies.

“Over one million women, children, elderly, and injured Palestinians were forced to flee to South Gaza,” Sherif said. “Overcrowding in the region and delayed flow of aid caused limited access to necessities such as shelters and tents. Thankfully, we were able to source and deliver these supplies to thousands in need.”

According to UNRWA, more than 30,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been killed by Israeli forces, more than 72,000 Palestinians injured, and more than 1 million residents internally displaced. Israel has also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza. According to the United Nations, this has caused about 16 percent of children under the age of two to suffer from acute malnutrition, and caused more than 2 million people to face the worst levels of food insecurity.

Baitulmaal’s first humanitarian aid convoy successfully entered Gaza with 14 trucks of aid, and the second humanitarian aid convoy entered Gaza with 10 trucks of aid. This will be the third aid convoy that has entered Gaza, with more aid convoys on the way.

In addition to the entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza, Baitulmaal has also been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7.

900 Families in Palestine Receive Winter Aid

JERUSALEM, PALESTINE, January 29, 2025 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed essential winter relief to 900 vulnerable Palestinian families in Jerusalem and West Bank.

The aid included heaters, blankets, and winter clothing —including jackets for children —to help families stay warm during the cold months.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, most of the beneficiaries included children, households with unemployed workers, orphan families, the elderly and people with disabilities.

“Winter is especially cruel for families experiencing economic difficulties,” Sherif said. “Without adequate heating or warm clothing, the risks to their health and safety rise dramatically.”

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), winter temperatures in Palestine can drop as low as 3°C (37°F), leaving thousands of vulnerable families at risk of cold-related illnesses and worsening living conditions.

In addition to providing winter relief in Palestine, Baitulmaal has also provided educational support, Ramadan food packages, emergency aid and hygienic supplies. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

120,000 Displaced Palestinians Receive Food, Hygiene Supplies in Gaza

More photos and video below

RAFAH, PALESTINE January 18, 2024 – Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed emergency humanitarian aid to 120,000 displaced Palestinians in Gaza after the successful entry of Baitulmaal’s second aid convoy from Egypt earlier this week.

Ten trucks crossed into Gaza from the Rafah border crossing carrying humanitarian aid such as 2,160 food packages, 2,700 hygiene kits, and 120 tonnes of freshly ground and packed flour.

According to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal, the expressed needs of displaced Palestinians were taken into account when determining what aid to secure on the restricted numbers of trucks that are allowed into Gaza.

“We prioritized dignity kits for women and girls after hearing about their struggles,” Sherif said. “We also took into consideration other needs such as dry yeast to bake bread, as well as their desire for coffee and tea that gives them some comfort.”

The 120 tonnes of flour were allocated to families in Khan Younis, Rafah, and cancer and kidney failure patients. According to Sherif, a local group of women volunteered to prepare 120,000 loaves of fresh bread for these patients.

This aid convoy was overseen and prepared in Egypt by a delegation of U.S.-based activists that included Linda Sarsour, Zahra Billoo and Suzie Othman.

“Resources are getting into Gaza,” Sarsour said, referring to Baitulmaal’s ability to pass inspections and send critical aid into Gaza. She thanked the charity and its donors who “allow us to bless the people who are in Gaza and all around the world who need these resources in these very dire times.”

Since October 7, Israeli forces have killed more than 25,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, injured more than 57,000, and displaced more than 1 million residents, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Israel also imposed a blockade on food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza. Prior to October 7, Gaza relied on more than 500 humanitarian aid trucks per day to meet the needs of the population. Since then, only a fraction of aid trucks have been allowed in.

Baitulmaal’s first humanitarian aid convoy successfully entered Gaza with 14 trucks of aid. This will be the second aid convoy that has entered Gaza, with more aid convoys on the way.

In addition to the successful entry of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza, Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Gaza providing food, shelter kits, hygiene supplies, clean water, psychosocial support and other emergency aid since October 7.
