10 Water Wells Supply Hope for Displaced Syrian Children

???? More photos below… ????

TELL ABYAD, SYRIA, August 2, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed the construction of 10 water wells serving 7,470 internally-displaced Syrians in northern Syria.

The water wells are located on the premises of 10 schools, including:

  • Alsared school, with a population of 550 students
  • Katrana school, with a population of 700 students
  • Almarouda school, with a population of 700 students
  • Alkalta school, with a population of 800 students
  • Kormaza school, with a population of 600 students
  • Alsherkrak school, with a population of 950 students
  • Alkalta school, with a population of 500 students
  • Albadee school, with a population of 900 students
  • Doganyah Alsadiq school, with a population of 750 students
  • Dabaa school, with a population of 1020 students

The wells provide clean water to the plumbing of the schools that span four villages in Tell Abyad, a Syrian city that shares a border with Turkey. Having escaped violence in their hometowns, this small community of approximately 160,000 internally displaced Syrians relies on humanitarian aid for their survival. Among the areas of greatest need is potable water, which has been in short supply in the region.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said the construction of these wells ensures access to safe, clean water for the area’s residents and allows school children to thrive.

“When these families finally found a safe place to stay, the dirty water they drank became the new threat,” Sohail said. “These wells ensure that they have access to this basic life necessity and one less thing to worry about as they rebuild their lives.”

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Syria has the largest displaced population in the world. More than 6 million people — including 2.5 million children — are displaced within Syria. Many displaced Syrians live in deplorable conditions owing to continued violence and escalating poverty over the course of an on-going, 10-year long civil war.

Baitulmaal has provided food, clothing, winter aid, and emergency assistance to internally-displaced Syrians and refugees. Donors who would like to learn more or contribute to programs at Baitulmaal can visit their website at johnjanney.org/.
