COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH July 5, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 4,550 meals to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah.

Approximately 910 families living in Cox’s Bazar received fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered cows.

Most of the beneficiaries were Rohingya refugees, specifically widows/widowers, people living with disabilities, and the elderly, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal.

“Our Udhiyah program offers donors a chance to fulfill their religious duty to distribute fresh meat to the poor,” said Sohail. “When this includes people who have suffered terrible persecution because of their faith, like the Rohingya have, it makes this act of worship even more touching.”

According to the UN, there are nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees living in Cox’s Bazar. It is considered to be the largest refugee settlement in the world. Rohingya refugees face multiple crises such as floods and fires that leave already vulnerable families at risk of secondary displacement, hunger and illness.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. More than 13,000 families were given food packages that included basic food necessities such as rice, sugar, salt, flour, dates, and cooking oil. Beneficiaries live in countries such as Afghanistan, Ghana, Indonesia, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, MexicoNigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Togo, and Yemen and include Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as well as Syrian and Uyghur refugees in Turkiye.

Many of the beneficiaries included orphans, displaced people, women-headed households, and people with disabilities, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal.

“Preparing iftar as a family and sharing meals with the community is a staple of Ramadan,” said Sohail. “Families who struggle to have basic food necessities on their shelves should not be deprived of that beautiful blessing.”

According to the World Bank, more than 200 million people are facing a food crisis. This is due in part to rising costs and disruption in the availability of food. Low income households spend a majority of their income on food, making them more vulnerable to food insecurity when faced with inflation and other emergencies.

More Than 1.4M Ramadan Meals Distributed in Lebanon

More photos below

SIDON, LEBANON June 2, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed Ramadan food packages that provided over 1.4 million meals in Lebanon.

The first distribution provided food assistance to approximately 5,150 families living in Palestinian refugee camps in Tripoli, Akkar, and Beqaa Valley. The second distribution provided for approximately 253 families living in Sidon and Tyre.

Beneficiaries received a month’s worth of items such as rice, sugar, salt, onions, dates, and cooking oil. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program development manager at Baitulmaal, recipients include Baitulmaal-sponsored orphans, their families, and many other families struggling with food insecurity.

“Ramadan is a time to enjoy a meal with your loved ones,” Sohail said. “We wanted to ensure that vulnerable orphans and their families will not be left hungry this Ramadan.”

Due to the economic crisis in Lebanon, living costs rose dramatically, which prevented families from accessing enough food and other basic needs each day. Growing unemployment and poverty, skyrocketing inflation rates and the ongoing instability have contributed to a deterioration of food security for children and families.

In addition, Baitulmaal provides medical aid, winter aid, and emergency aid in Lebanon. If you would like to learn more or contribute to similar programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at johnjanney.org/.
