New Water Filtration System Serves 3,570 Villagers in Pakistan

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, September 21, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently installed a water filtration system in Jamshoro, Pakistan that provides clean water to 3,570 beneficiaries.

The new filtration system replaces one that was installed in 2010 to address water quality issues after flooding in the area. The new system purifies water used by the local school and surrounding communities, benefitting approximately 2,070 students and staff as well as 1,500 additional villagers.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the local school uses approximately 1,000 liters of water per day, and the system filters more than 720,000 liters of water per year for the school and village.

“Without a filtration system, people in this village risk drinking polluted water and suffering from waterborne illnesses,” Sohail said. “This new system gives students and their families  access to clean, safe water without worrying about getting sick.”

According to UNICEF, approximately 70 percent of households in Pakistan still drink bacterially contaminated water. UNESCO estimates that 40 percent of all diseases in Pakistan are due to unsanitary drinking water. This has led to stunting in children and over 53,000 child deaths per year.

Fresh Meat for More Than 300,000 Meals Provided to Families in Need

DALLAS, TX August 27, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 308,008 meals to impoverished families in poverty-stricken and conflict-ridden regions around the world during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 16,504 families received portions of meat from cows, goats and other livestock in countries such as Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said that while the need in these countries has been on the rise, so has the compassion of donors.

“Many of the families we help have been hit by tragedy after tragedy,” Sohail said. “Each package of meat served more than food; it also provided a glimmer of hope to those who’ve had little to look forward to in this difficult year.”

According to the United Nations, acute food insecurity has soared 40 percent this year due to conflict, climate change, rising food prices and the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting a record 270 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that more than two billion people worldwide suffer from “hidden hunger,” defined as a deficiency in nutrients such as iron, zinc, and folic acid from a lack of diversity in diets.

For those struggling with extreme poverty and food insecurity, having meat to eat is a rare occurrence. In many Muslim-majority countries, nutrient-rich meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah. This year, Baitulmaal distributed approximately 54 tons of fresh, locally-sourced meat on behalf of donors wishing to fulfill the Islamic traditions of sacrifice, charity, and good-will towards others.

Impoverished Families in Pakistan Receive Fresh Meat for 28,340 Meals

KARACHI, PAKISTAN August 01, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 28,340 meals to families in Pakistan during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 6,000 beneficiaries received portions of meat from locally-sourced cows. The recipients lived in rural and impoverished areas such as the Noshahro Feroz district and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan.

200 Families in Pakistan Celebrate Eid With Baitulmaal

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, June 7, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered zakat-ul-fitr funds, food, and gifts to 200 families in remote villages in Pakistan.

Around 50 families in the Sujawal district and 150 families in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border received clothing, toys, bangles and food boxes. They also celebrated Eid day with balloons, goody bags, and henna with Baitulmaal representatives. 

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, these Baitulmaal field workers have developed a special relationship with the local villagers over years of responding to emergencies, sustaining their economies with vocational training, and enabling access to water wells and community centers.

“It’s beautiful to see everyone enjoy Eid together as one family,” Sohail said. “Our donors have supported these communities with dignity and enabled them to thrive.”

Baitulmaal distributed approximately 3.9M meals this past Ramadan, as well as zakat-ul-fitr to those in need. The charity is currently preparing to provide more food and meat distributions for the upcoming Hajj season. Donors Dedicate New Masjid, Wells in Memory of Loved Ones

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, May 10, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed the construction of three masajid and wells for impoverished communities in the Sujawal district of Pakistan, which are the inaugural projects of its new Build a Masjid program.

Due to donor demand, Baitulmaal started the new Build a Masjid program to provide communal spaces for impoverished communities that lack a place to gather for worship, discussions, and other socialization. The projects are usually paired with a new water well to provide the community with a safe, clean source of fresh water. 

The first three projects were initiated and funded by donors as a sadaqa jaariyah, or continuous charity, in loving memory of family members who have recently passed. 

Younis Khan, former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team and their current batting coach, helped raise funds for infrastructure development in Pakistan with a portion of these funds dedicated to Build a Masjid projects. A new community center and water source, the first resulting from this effort, are serving a population of 309 people in Sawan Tharani village who did not have access to clean drinking water or communal space in their remote area of Pakistan. In appreciation of Younis Khan’s efforts, the project was dedicated in honor of his mother, Khursheed Begum, who passed in 2019. 

The Riaz family lost their brother, Shaykh Azam Riaz, imam of Jesus, Son of Mary Mosque in New York, and father Dr. Mohammad Riaz within days of each other after long battles with COVID-19 last year. They raised funds through a crowdfunding campaign to build a masjid and well in each of their names. The masjid and well in Khameeso Mallah village, which was built in memory of their brother, serves a population of 238 people. The masjid and well in Meer Jat village, which was built in memory of their father, serves a population of 205 people.

As a faith-based humanitarian charity that provides aid to people in need regardless of faith or nationality, Baitulmaal coordinates masjid construction projects at the request of donors who fully fund them, but donors can also contribute to the Build a Masjid fund to support initiated projects. Baitulmaal does not use general funds for its Build a Masjid program.

190,950 Meals Provided to Families in Pakistan

SINDH, PAKISTAN, April 22, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 190,950 meals to underprivileged families in Pakistan, and more are currently being delivered to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

Various distribution points in Pakistan provided food packages to 475 families, including the Sujawal, Tharparkar, and Noshahro Feroz districts in Sindh and the Mansehra district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.  Aid recipients included widows and underserved families impacted by historic flooding in the last year.

The food packages, which include items such as rice, flour, lentils, potatoes and oil, were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Approximately 1.9 billion Muslims around the world observe the month of Ramadan, but many among them suffer from extreme poverty due to conflict, displacement, natural and man-made disasters, as well as other social, political and economic factors. According to the World Bank, this year saw an increase in poverty levels worldwide — the first rise in a generation of declining levels — due to the global pandemic, conflict, and climate change.

Although poverty was on the decline in Pakistan over the past 15 years, Pakistani government officials expect 10 million more people to fall under the poverty line this year due to the global pandemic and national economic downturn. This will bring those living in poverty up to 60 million across Pakistan. COVID-19 was just one factor impacting families in Pakistan. Last year saw one of the worst monsoon seasons in Pakistan, which killed 400, injured hundreds more, and displaced an estimated 200,000.

Winter Kits Distributed to 800 Beneficiaries Impacted by the Cold in Pakistan

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, February 19, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered winter kits to 800 villagers in rural Pakistan experiencing an unusually long period of cold this winter.

Warm clothes, shoes and blankets were distributed to 450 children, 150 women, and 200 men in rural villages in the Sindh province. These include Jati, Sawan Tharani, Salah Pusiyo, Khameeso Mallah, Abdullah Mallah, Liyar Jat, Hassan Mallah, and the Sujawal District.

According to meteorologists in the region, colder than usual temperatures were predicted, with some areas experiencing below freezing conditions. The colder, drier weather follows an extreme monsoon season and locust invasions which destroyed crops and displaced families last year. The situation was compounded by the coronavirus pandemic, which further impacted aid efforts.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said that many of the villagers were ill-equipped to withstand the cold.

“This year has been unseasonably cold in many regions,” Sohail said. “Many families in these villages needed shoes and jackets to protect against bone-chilling temperatures.”

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in some of the aforementioned villages digging water wells funded by donors in recent months. This enabled field workers to mobilize quickly to deliver the latest round of winter relief to affected communities.

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, January 28, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed the construction of 10 new hand-pump wells providing water to over 2,600 individuals in villages in rural Pakistan.

Each well was funded by a generous Baitulmaal donor. Below is a list of villages and each corresponding dedication as well as the number of villagers who now have access to safe, clean water.

  • Gul Muhammad Parheri, donated by Mahmoud Mikbel, accessible to 250 villagers.
  • Rabu Jat, donated by Mahmoud Mikbel, accessible to 250 villagers.
  • Mithan Norhiyo, donated by the Baitulmaal USA team, accessible to 275 villagers.
  • Ramoon Mallah, donated by the Baitulmaal USA team, accessible to 200 villagers.

The new wells follow the construction of 10 wells in Pakistan earlier this year. More on those wells can be found here.

“We are touched by the outpouring of support for well projects,” said Elizabeth Sohail, programs manager at Baitulmaal. “It’s incredible how we can come together to keep the clean water flowing.”

Earlier this month, Baitulmaal announced the completion of its first solar-powered, deep-water well in Yemen in a live-streamed event with Carson Caldwell, a cross-country cyclist who raised awareness for Yemen and in whose name the well was dedicated.

Baitulmaal Digs 10 New Donor-Funded Wells in Pakistan

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, January 7, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed the construction of 10 new hand-pump wells now providing water to approximately 2,200 individuals in villages in rural Pakistan around four to five hours drive from Karachi.

Each well was funded by a generous Baitulmaal donor. Below is a list of villages and each corresponding dedication as well as the number of villagers who now have access to safe, clean water.

According to the World Bank, access to improved water sources in Pakistan has been on the decline in recent years. This has been compounded by a historic monsoon season last year, which flooded the region and drove people from their homes in search of dry land and clean drinking water. Worldwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 780 million people lack access to clean water.

Funding improved water sources can help reverse the trend, according to Elizabeth Sohail, programs manager at Baitulmaal.

“These 10 wells will provide clean drinking water for more than 2 million meals every year,” said Sohail. “Our donors are playing an essential role in pushing back against contaminated water and the waterborne illnesses it causes.”

Baitulmaal Responds to 2020 Monsoon Floods in Pakistan

KARACHI, PAKISTAN, September 1, 2020 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian organization, is currently providing emergency relief in Karachi and Sujawal, Pakistan, in response to record-level flooding.

Karachi has been hit with the worst torrential rains in 89 years. Villages in Sujawal that Baitulmaal donors have adopted for humanitarian assistance were also flooded. Water levels reaching as high as waist-deep have pushed people to flee to higher ground.

Baitulmaal field workers helped evacuate people in the Gulberg Town part of Karachi, and are providing hot meals, water, hygiene kits and food packages to flood survivors. In addition, Baitulmaal field workers are providing clean drinking water to affected areas in Karachi like Yousuf Goth and Abdullah Town. They are also using trucks to deliver food and supplies to people who were unable to evacuate.

Baitulmaal Programs Manager Elizabeth Sohail said that her team’s efforts will not end when the rain ends.

“We will continue distributing food and clean water over the next couple of weeks,” said Sohail. “We are evaluating the ongoing situation and will determine our next steps to prepare for continued rising water, expected illnesses from exposure to contaminated water and needed repairs in the villages.”
