900 Iftar Meals Provided at Al-Aqsa During Ramadan

???? More photos below… ????

JERUSALEM, PALESTINE May 19, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided 900 iftar meals to Palestinians breaking their fast at the Al-Aqsa mosque during Ramadan.

The iftar, or meal to break the fast, took place on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 2022, during the last ten nights of Ramadan. These days are considered to be the holiest days of the month. Muslims believe that feeding a fasting person is a virtuous act rewarded by God, and rewards are multiplied during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

According to Baitulmaal program manager Elizabeth Sohail, the overwhelming response by donors enabled the charity to provide iftar meals for a second night.

“We were humbled by the number of people wanting to provide a meal for Palestinians during Ramadan,” Sohail said. “It is a beautiful thing to see people wishing others well and supporting them during difficult times.”

Palestinians face increased harassment and raids on the Al-Aqsa mosque at the hands of occupation forces during the month of Ramadan. Similar intrusion on the mosque compound last year led to the bombardment of Gaza, which killed more than 250 people, including 66 children.

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE May 5, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, delivered 625 food packages that provided 180,000 meals for 4,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip during Ramadan.

The packages were distributed in Khan Younis, Rafah, Gaza, and North Gaza governorates, where a majority of residents are living in poverty with little to no income sources. Many of the families have more than five members and include widows, orphans, disabled and elderly persons, according to Baitulmaal program director Elizabeth Sohail.

“Despite their circumstances, the people of Gaza look forward to Ramadan with so much hope,” Sohail said. “The smile on their faces when they receive the food packages is priceless.”

Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The charity also provides food, water, healthcare and other humanitarian aid to people in Palestine. 20,000 Palestinians Benefit from Clean Water Tanks in Gaza

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE, January 18, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the delivery and set-up of 100 water tanks in the Gaza Strip, bringing the total number of water tanks the charity operates in the area to 400.

Each tank provides access to free, clean water to approximately 50 individuals, or 7 families, throughout the year for an estimated 20,000 total beneficiaries.

The tanks are located in the following areas:

  • North governorate: (Beit Hanoun, Jablia Camp, Abraj Al Nada)
  • Gaza governorate: (Moghraqa, Al Zatoon)
  • Middle governorate: (Al Brouk, Um Dhair, Al Maghazi camp, Al Sawarha, Al Zawiada, Wadi Al Salqa, Deir Al Balah camp, Al Buraij refugees, Al Nusierat camp, Joher Al Diek)
  • Khan Younis governorate: (Nahr Al Bared)
  • Rafah governorate: (the Swedish Village, Al Mawasi)

Tanks are refilled weekly, according to Baitulmaal program manager Elizabeth Sohail, and may be refilled more frequently depending on need.

“Without these tanks, many families have no other choice but to drink from polluted sources, putting their health at risk.” Sohail said. “Access to safe, potable water is a basic right, and these tanks deliver on that promise.”

Human rights experts recently warned that water in Gaza is “slowly poisoning” its residents. Water pollution is a leading cause of child mortality and accounts for a quarter of all illnesses in the area. Approximately 98% of groundwater is unfit to drink — often contaminated by sewage or seawater. According to the UN, only 10 percent of Gazans have access to safe drinking water.

1,000 Gazans Receive Winter Warmth

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE, January 5, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed winter aid to more than 1,000 impoverished Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.

Two hundred families in the Khan Younis and Middle Governorates received heavy blankets, electric heaters and winter clothing to protect against frigid temperatures in the region. Many of the recipients are among the poorest families living in marginalized camp communities and include vulnerable members such as orphans and the elderly.

“We must do everything we can to keep these families warm this winter,” said Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal. “They are already living in extreme hardship. Having these winter essentials is crucial to their health and safety.

According to the UN, more than 75 percent of Gazans rely on humanitarian aid. Approximately 2 million Palestinians are food insecure, with more than 1.4 million residing in Gaza. With high unemployment and poor housing conditions, thousands of Gazan families face increased suffering during the winter months.

Baitulmaal provides food, clothing, education support, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine. The charity also operates 300 water tanks in Gaza and is adding 100 more this year. Gaza Desalination Plant Provides Clean Water to 9,500 Residents

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE, November 18, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently installed a water desalination plant that provides clean, drinkable water to 9,500 residents in the Khan Younis governorate of the Gaza Strip.

The desalination plant is located in the village of Khuza’a in the Khan Younis camp. Residents are internally displaced Palestinians suffering from an ongoing occupation and blockade. They also suffer from a severe water shortage. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, this project helps local Palestinians by purifying otherwise undrinkable water.

Families in Gaza struggle to get clean water and often are left with few options besides buying questionable water from unreliable, unregulated sources at high prices,” Sohail said. “This water purification plant gives Palestinians access to safe, clean water at no cost to them.”

At a recent session of the UN Human Rights Council, experts warned that water in Gaza is “slowly poisoning” its residents. Water pollution is a leading cause of child mortality and accounts for a quarter of all illnesses in the area. The 11-day offensive on Gaza last May damaged 290 water supply facilities, exacerbating an already dire water crisis in the region.

The Khan Younis camp is considered to be one of the most vulnerable areas in the southern Gaza Strip. According to the UN, the area suffers from overcrowding, high unemployment and lack of access to adequate water and electricity. The UN estimates that up to 98 percent of the camp’s water supply is contaminated with sea water, sewage and other pollutants.

In addition to the new water desalination plant in Khan Younis, Baitulmaal operates 300 water tanks in the Gaza strip that provide safe, clean water to more than 15,000 residents. Another 100 tanks will be installed at the beginning of the year. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit johnjanney.org/.

1,000 Students in Gaza Receive Back-to-School Support

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE, October 4, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed back-to-school kits to 1,000 students in the impoverished Gaza Strip.

Each back-to-school kit includes items such as backpacks, stationary, shoes and uniforms. The kits were provided to boys and girls at UNRWA-run schools in the middle and northern Gaza governorates.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the supplies came just in time for many students who were impacted by escalating violence earlier this year.

“So many children lost everything, including all of their school supplies,” Sohail said. “Thanks to our donors, these kits give students what they need to go back to school and strive for a better future.”

Israeli airstrikes in May 2021 killed 256 civilians — including 66 children — and displaced approximately 74,000 Palestinians, according to the UN. The World Bank estimates up to $380 million in damage to Gaza’s infrastructure from 11 days of heavy bombardment. Among the impacted buildings were 50 schools that were destroyed. Approximately 4,000 students were relocated to other schools. Many continue to be at risk of missing out on an education due to financial hardship.

Facing over a half-century of occupation, Palestinians have limited access to food, water, healthcare, electricity or opportunities for education and employment, and over 80% of Gazans are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Baitulmaal has been providing humanitarian aid in Palestine since the organization’s inception. The charity operates 300 water tanks in Gaza and funds healthcare at the Yazour Clinic for underprivileged families in the West Bank. In addition to food, water, winter relief and emergency humanitarian aid, Baitulmaal also sponsors Palestinian orphans in Lebanon and Jordan. Fresh Meat for More Than 300,000 Meals Provided to Families in Need

???? More photos below… ????

DALLAS, TX August 27, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 308,008 meals to impoverished families in poverty-stricken and conflict-ridden regions around the world during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 16,504 families received portions of meat from cows, goats and other livestock in countries such as Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said that while the need in these countries has been on the rise, so has the compassion of donors.

“Many of the families we help have been hit by tragedy after tragedy,” Sohail said. “Each package of meat served more than food; it also provided a glimmer of hope to those who’ve had little to look forward to in this difficult year.”

According to the United Nations, acute food insecurity has soared 40 percent this year due to conflict, climate change, rising food prices and the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting a record 270 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that more than two billion people worldwide suffer from “hidden hunger,” defined as a deficiency in nutrients such as iron, zinc, and folic acid from a lack of diversity in diets.

For those struggling with extreme poverty and food insecurity, having meat to eat is a rare occurrence. In many Muslim-majority countries, nutrient-rich meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah. This year, Baitulmaal distributed approximately 54 tons of fresh, locally-sourced meat on behalf of donors wishing to fulfill the Islamic traditions of sacrifice, charity, and good-will towards others.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. GAZA, PALESTINE August 10, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 20,640 meals to families in the Gaza Strip during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 3,500 families living in various camps and settlements in Gaza, Rafah, Khan Younis and surrounding areas received portions of meat from locally-sourced cows.

Emergency Aid Distributed in Sheikh Jarrah, Gaza Strip

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE, May 18, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed food packages for 224,000 meals to residents of the besieged Gaza Strip as well as those living in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

This first round of humanitarian aid included food packages and bottled water for Palestinian families impacted by violence in the region, as well as refills of water tanks located in the Gaza Strip. Five hundred families near Damascus Gate (Bab Al-Amood) and Sheikh Jarrah neighborhoods received food packages for 123,900 meals, and another 500 families in the Gaza Strip received food packages for 100,800 meals along with fresh bread and water.

Baitulmaal field workers are continually assessing the situation in Palestine and responding with ongoing emergency aid for those in need. Elizabeth Sohail, programs manager for Baitulmaal, said she anticipates the need for emergency humanitarian aid to grow with the escalation in violence.

“Entire families are being ejected from their homes while others watch as their homes are bombed or otherwise destroyed,” said Sohail. “With every lost home is lost food, water as well as income and stability — and they need help now.”

As of today, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 213 Palestinians have been killed — including 61 children — and over 1,400 injured by Israeli airstrikes that began during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Facing over a half-century of occupation, Palestinians have limited access to food, water, healthcare, electricity, or opportunities for education and employment, and over 80% of Gazans are in need of humanitarian assistance. The recent violence has left thousands homeless and vulnerable as the situation continues to be volatile.

The charity, which has been on the ground in Palestine since its inception, operates 300 water tanks in Gaza and funds healthcare at the Yazour Clinic for underprivileged families in the West Bank. In addition to food, water, winter relief, medication, and emergency humanitarian aid, Baitulmaal also sponsors Palestinian orphans in Lebanon and Jordan. 217,080 Meals Delivered to Families in Palestine

???? More photos below… ????

GAZA, PALESTINE, April 22, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 217,080 meals to impoverished families in Gaza and the West Bank, and more are currently being delivered to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

Around 685 families suffering from extreme poverty were provided food packages so far. The food packages, which include items such as eggs, rice, pasta, cheese, oil and dates were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Approximately 1.9 billion Muslims around the world observe the month of Ramadan, but many among them suffer from extreme poverty due to conflict, displacement, natural and man-made disasters, as well as other social, political and economic factors. According to the World Bank, this year saw an increase in poverty levels worldwide — the first rise in a generation of declining levels — due to the global pandemic, conflict, and climate change.

In the Gaza Strip, 1 in 3 people cannot afford nutritious food, and 80% rely on humanitarian aid, according to the UN. Beyond food insecurity, Gazans have been facing an alarming rise of coronavirus cases in the weeks leading up to Ramadan, as well as military airstrikes in the past few days, which have largely prevented families from accessing basic needs. The World Bank also warned that poverty rates will double in the West Bank due to the coronavirus pandemic and economic decline.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Palestine, and plans to deliver 3.9M meals during the 2021 Ramadan season to those in need around the world. The charity also collects and distributes zakat funds on behalf of their donors.
